When will he stop being the village idiot and start being valiant?

Depending upon how large his crest is, he may be oblivious to his surroundings because he can't see them. Because of the fact that Polish have trouble seeing above them, he may not be an effective guardian against aerial predators. Just common sense.

I agree with all the PPs - trim his crest and give him time to wisen up to correct roo behavior. I have a Polish (pullet) that actually overheated b/c she couldn't see the water. She's all better now that she has considerably less 'fro.

I nabbed my roo and wrapped him in a towel to trim his fro without stabbing him in the eyes. It's a big help.

I'd say roos are much more capable and helpful by 4 months- he's just a tween boy right now, so can't be of much help. I tend to think of their weeks as 'years' of growth. If he's 11...he's 11! When he's 14 he'll be randy and awkward, jumping everything that moves and have ZERO social grace. Wait until he's 16! You'll have a good worker on your hands, and 18, he'll start really being a bit of a man.
