I'm new to raising baby chicks, we've only ever bought laying hens in the past! We have leghorn chickens who started laying at 19 weeks old. We have since added 6 sapphire gem chicks to the group (25 cents a piece at rural king .. I couldn't pass up a good deal 🤣) they are 8 weeks old. Those of you who have sapphire gem chickens when did they start laying? I know I still have a while to go yet.. just curious!! I read online they take longer to lay then a leghorn.

I don’t know about the specific timing of the breed but you will be able to tell when they are about to start laying because their combs and wattles will redden, their pelvic bones will shift and broaden, their vents will get bigger, their bellies softer and they might hunker down when you approach them.
