Where Are My Piano Players!!!!!!

chickenfarmer, I never really told people that I played piano when I was in high school. If I did, they would then ask, how long have you been playing? Do you know how to play this? What about this? etc. I learned to play Moonlight Sonata as my second piece...I played Bach's Minuet in G as my first. I then learned a simple version of a Chopin etude, then a 7min-long transcription of Canon in D. Of course one of the first pieces I learned was Fur Elise. I have forgotten most of the music that I've learned to play over the years because I didn't have my hands on a piano while I was in college. There was one in the basement...but it was a little creepy going down there, to say the least. Recently I've mostly been learning pop tunes. It's different than what I'm used to, but at least reading the music is easy
big_smile.png
Relearning the music is hard though!! It's like I get bored at the first few measures. I get impatient.

Keep on playing and don't let those high-society piano players bring you down. I play this instrument because it has always brought me joy and peace. I play music whenever something happy or sad happens to me. It doesn't matter whether you have a $50/hour teacher or you're your teacher (as I always have been to me..).

the piano is not my first instrument, but since I have started playing I have found my playing with my primary instrument has improved. The piano really is the foundation for it ALL

! Good luck to you and your daughter

I get the same thing all of the time. " Can you play this", "Can you play that" it is quite annoying at times, but I dont get too angry with them, most people are just curious

Moonlight Sonota is a very beautiful peice, the 3rd mvmt. is a real bear
hmm.png
I learned Canon in C maj. Or most of it anyway. But I have found a real attraction to the impressionist style of piano. It is so beautiful, and the thing I love about it is there is little if no music theory
big_smile.png
the only rule is listening pleasure
smile.png
And also thanks for the encouragement
big_smile.png
I really needed it

I am tired of these people that THINK they know what music is. They focus more on the meaning of the music rather than just the music itself. Seems stupid to me
smack.gif
. Instead of trying to make the music do something it wasn't meant to do, why not just listen to it, thats ultimately what music is for, listening pleasure.

Music is meant to change emotion not ones way of thinking. Oh man,
barnie.gif
there I go ranting again

. anyway nice hearing from all of you folks.

When I look at what I call professional piano players and how their fingers and hands move so gracefully over the keys, I am a little jealous
big_smile.png
But I know it took them years and years to develop that skill, and I don't think I have it in me to practice hours a day to achieve that skill level. Once I learn a piece or song, I no longer look at the sheet music or remember if I'm supposed to go slow or fast at certain points...I play the song differently each time, I think.

I do respect very knowledgeable people who can help me improve upon my playing, but there is a big difference between too much ego and being helpful. I get the same thing with painters or people who work with visual art. I do not like showing my drawings or paintings to others because they expect art to be something else, while I expect it to be something else. I have met "artists" who think that to be an "artist" you have to paint or draw when you are sad, mad or angry...and that the result has to be something "dark." That's not me
smile.png

Chickenfarmer, what piece (or pieces) are you learning now?

Do you enjoy playing the piano?/

I agree some musicians are "holier Than Thou," for example I have trained classical voice, my mom studied opera and was at the Met when she met my dad , but, I really dislike the "Holier Than Thou,"
attitude, I love to sing, that is it.

And I do sing

I am learning the Second and the First Arabesque by Debussy, also delving into Clair De Lune a little. I am the same way, I play a peice differently each time. I find it more interesting that way. I have also been painting semi-professionaly for over a decade and know EXACTLY what your talking about
lol.png
. I have met these same people over and over. The totured artists that feel they must create something dark and mysterious to call it art. I get this all the time. Why can't my tree, just be a tree ! why does it have to have some deep meaning? Why does everyone think of artists as tortured souls? I am a very happy person, and I paint that way. I paint because I love it, because God blessed me with the ability to paint. I very rarely paint when I am sad, mad, or angry because I never love the outcome, and I dont think art should be downgraded to something that brings pain, anger, or sadness in any way. But most of the people I find that paint or create that way don't know who they are as an artist or why they paint. I paint for the simple joy of painting, because, as I said earlier, I was blessed with the ability to do so. I love color and movement because that is who I am. I love color and movement in a peice of art, so that is the way I paint. I think music and art are meant to lift the soul not drag it down. So yeah.......... all that sums up to TOTALLY agree with you
lol.png
.

Maybe later I can put one of my peices up here
smile.png
I would also love to see your work as well. I know this is a music thread; but hey, art is art.

Always wished that I could sing well. I have a song in my heart, so the only way I can express that song is to make my music
smile.png
because I CANNOT sing
lol.png
I admire those that have a great voice, and Opera is also one of my favorite. Keep it up, music makes a merry heart, and a merry heart is the best medicine we have
smile.png
. Enjoy cannot describe how much I love to play. It makes my soul happy

I know that sounds a little cheesy, but its true!

Can I indulge in a PMM? (Proud Mommy Moment!) My kids have been taking piano lessons for a couple of years and the violin for about 6 months. Here are a couple of you tube links of them hard at their practice:

Gabe playing He's a Pirate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lf4gAWrm7o&feature=related

Mike
playing Pachelbel's Cannon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uFo9xDk9cE&feature=related

Ellie
playing Be Thou My Vision (on the violin!)

They LOVE playing the piano and now the violin. My hat is off to anyone who has the heartfelt dedication to master a musical instrument~keep up the good work!

You should be proud!!!!!!! I love all three of those peices !!!

So great to see kids picking up instruments and studying the arts. Most kids now wish only to sit in front of the computer all day, or play video games. I don't even know you or your kids and I feel so proud
gig.gif
. Keep it up kids, when you get older people will really respect you for sticking with it and mastering an instrument. It will impress folks on college applications, work interviews, and so many other places. If you would like to share some more PMM's with us, we would be more than tickled to indulge along with you
