chickenfarmer, I never really told people that I played piano when I was in high school. If I did, they would then ask, how long have you been playing? Do you know how to play this? What about this? etc. I learned to play Moonlight Sonata as my second piece...I played Bach's Minuet in G as my first. I then learned a simple version of a Chopin etude, then a 7min-long transcription of Canon in D. Of course one of the first pieces I learned was Fur Elise. I have forgotten most of the music that I've learned to play over the years because I didn't have my hands on a piano while I was in college. There was one in the basement...but it was a little creepy going down there, to say the least. Recently I've mostly been learning pop tunes. It's different than what I'm used to, but at least reading the music is easy
Relearning the music is hard though!! It's like I get bored at the first few measures. I get impatient.
Keep on playing and don't let those high-society piano players bring you down. I play this instrument because it has always brought me joy and peace. I play music whenever something happy or sad happens to me. It doesn't matter whether you have a $50/hour teacher or you're your teacher (as I always have been to me..).
