My new quail coop is done and i am anxious to fill it (with 6-10 coturnix quail). I want mostly females & 1 male because my interest is eggs. I don't really want to hatch eggs or get chicks- where can i find adults that look less sickly than those at my local feedstore? can adult quail be shipped in numbers less than the huge bunches i see on the hatchery websites i have visited? does anyone here sell them? I live in southern california. would love to get a mix of colors - and most importantly HEALTHY BIRDS (eek the ones at the feed store looked rough- sleepy swollen eyes) so far the only site i found that appears to ship the adult birds is stellargamebirds.com- has anyone ordered from her before? much thanks for yur time!!!

Thank you both for replies! Teach97- you are right, shipping costs as predicted are a bit intimidating, though likely worth it unless i find a better local source. Rainwolf- I am in the LA area here in CA. Also many thanks to Alexandra for quick helpful replies from stellargamebirds. The support from the fowl community online is amazing and hugely appreciated!

go to 1901 w.8th st. los angeles, CA 90057 it close to macarthor park the store has lot of quail and different colors and always has baby quail also they sell button quailaswell lot of colors to choose from hope this helped. good luck

I know that you say you don't want chicks, but keep in mind, coturnix mature UBER-fast. You can go from day-old to laying in 5-6 weeks. Just something to keep in mind if you don't have any luck finding adults locally.

Besides, coturnix chicks are awful cute. You do have to get a lot of them to ensure enough hens, though.

First- HUGE HUGE THANKS to birdmaniac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- after reading your message I took your suggestion and braved the freeway to 1901 w.8th st. and brought home four beautiful quail that I adore (yep four spoiled gals now in a coop that is 4'x3' and they are pretty sure they have found heaven- especially in the form of dirt).
The guy at 1901 w.8th st. was pretty low on adults but has lots of chicks so should have a bunch again soon. And yes sfw2- the wee chicks were tempting but i know I would get attached and just don't want to deal with the males, I think i will go back and get more when they are old enough to be sexed.
Anyway- I LOVE my new quail- they have already laid 2 beautiful eggs and they are incredibly friendly. So much so that I think I will be modifying the front door of the coop tomorrow with a bit of smaller gauge screen so racoon paws really cant make a go at the curious little gals who like to poke their beaks through and sleep in a pile against it (already it is aviary wire so should be somewhat safe). And Fat Daddy I will try to get some pics of the coop to post tomorrow. I am not much of a carpenter but i am pretty stoked on my design- it is based on one sheet of plywood with no waste. Again- thanks to all for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you mention smaller wire against predators...anything bigger than 1/2 inch will loose you some birds...believe me as i learned from experience! i THOUGHT 1 inch would be safe.
Have FUN with your new gang!
