i live in michigan, and the local pet stores only have this miniture dove thing(cant remember the name). Anywho i want a fullsize dove or pigeon. where would be a good place to get one????
oh and in your opinion, dove or pigeon

Doves are smaller and cuter but pigeons are beautiful and you can let them frrerange without them leaving. Think like a mouse and a rat. I would try a local market, pet expo, ask the petshop for breeders or even local shows... goodluck with them and i hope you get a cute one (altho we do need pics of any new animals

eggbid.com is a good place to get them but most times u have to have them shipped in less u can find a breeder on there close to u. poultry auctions and poultry shows usually sell them also that's how i get mine local. our petco doesn't carry them and our local petstore only carries ringneck doves once in a blue moon.

i have pigeons and ringneck doves. i love both of them my dove's r smaller but i love their coos however they r more holdable without pooing on ya which is nice. in all honesty my pigeons r my favs the doves r not as colorful as they r. i have fancy pigeons so they r alot neater to look at than the doves r since most of my pigeons have curled feathers on the wings. the pigeons have been better nesters and breeders and to me r less picky to raise. there seems to be more color, kinds and breeds with pigeons than doves too. if i could only choose one in a heartbeat it would be pigeons.

Personally, I never thought I'd have pigeons, but I love my white homers. That's the only kind I have, or want. I never get tired of watching them fly.

Where do you live in Michigan? I have a friend that lives south of Lansing (Pittsford) who keeps fancy pigeons. There is a weekly poultry auction near him where there are quite a few pigeon people.

Would you be interested in adopting some king pigeons from Mickacoo.org? They have shipping available. A lot of kings need homes soon in CA or they will be killed (in other shelters, but Mickacoo doesn't kill. However, they do take in what they can from shelters who do)

Much better to save a life than buy from a breeder, in my opinion. Especially if you just want a pet or birds for fun

i looked at muckoos and i read somthing about a application??
i would be willing to adopt, but honestly not if it is a hassle

Go to the local park with a net and get one for free. But "there's no such thing as a free puppy..."

But first do a lot of research to make sure you have a nice home to it, with the correct foods.

In most areas, pigeons don't count as "local" birds and are considered a pest. You can go where they hang out and catch one with a net. It will take a bit of time letting them get close before you catch one.

If you go that route, go on the internet and get a medications "kit". Many pigeon suppliers sell everything you need in one box to treat just about every disease a pigeon could have.
Then you'll need to dust him with "7" dust to kill any bird lice or mites it may have. It won't like it much but it'l be all the better for it. Don't worry though, bird lice don't like people so they won't get on you. Most healthy birds won't have them anyway. It's the scruffy, sickly looking one's to be wary of.

Come to think about it.... It's better to buy one from a local club or someone.

I think it's better to give homes to those who need them rather than take some out of the 'wild', who are perfectly fine and happy where they are

But to each his own. Having to spiff up caught ferals and then trying to tame them down is more trouble than it's worth usually.

Totally not cool to take them out of the wild. I hope you were joking.

Anyhow, how far away from battle creek are you? The pet shop I got my ringneck dove hen from is located on capital avenue. Not the greatest shop in the world, but she does have a lot of nice looking doves of various colors and can also sex them for you. most doves are small. ring necks are about the best and cheapest you will find.

Rescues are also good, but beware of the ones that are against breeding, and have overly strict adoption rules. Some won't adopt for stupid reasons, like if you have an intact non breeding animal house that is another species.
