Where did it come from?!

I have some chicks. Some of them have 5 toes. Its weird because there mom and dad don't have 5 toes.

Where did this come from?

Spontaneous mutation? A throwback to a grandparent? I've had silkies with 4 toes on each foot and 6 toes. It happens.

Polydactyly is complicated. There is a recessive form of polydactyly. The environment during incubation can suppress the trait. The parents carry the genes for polydactyly but do not have the extra digit or digits.
