I did pretty well with mixing it as I was putting it in the tire. Leaves on the bottom...as they were already there. A layer of sand then a layer of ash. Mixed that up pretty good. Then sprinkled DE. The repeated that same layer/mix until full. Then just topped it off with ashes. They're still afraid of it though...so it's all moot...
really it isn't makes us feel better to treat them well then they use it behind your back or dig a good whole in the coop for you to fall in![]()
I so enjoy their company. I wish the feeling was mutual, however. I like watching them get bigger (and fatter) and noticing changes as they age. Pretty cool stuff. My mind is always going...thinking of things to do for them that they would enjoy. I can't wait to build their bigger coop...which I'm sure they will hate. lol
Ah, they like you they're just playing hard to get. Happens to eveybody, got a hen I've had for a year and a half and she's just now accepting the fact i don't want to kill her.![]()

Oh my yes...I find that I have the scavenger gene now that I have these little critters. I see every pile of whatever as a possibility. lol ANDDDDDD.....the more I peruse this site, the more clever ideas I find!!! Dang addicting! My hubby and I were walking around a building that I used to work in. Its about to be demolished. 100+ years old, hundreds of thousands of square feet. Anyway, he's looking at things he could use, I'm seeing "chicken" in everything I look at. Oooh, there's a little wooden box on the wall, how can I use that in the coop? Oh, there's a nice metal cabinet, I could store all my chicken junk in there.... It never ends. lol
We did find a bunch of stuff in the nurse's office, old dusty bandages, tape, gauze, etc. But most of it is in sealed packages. I said it may not be good for humans, but I bet I can use most of it for the chickens!!![]()

They won't all be like that. I think they might be in their skittish stage. When they get to point of lay and start squatting for you they will act differently. More bold and demanding. Also, when they squat they can't run away and you can just pick them right up, or pretend you are a roo and scratch their back - then watch them walk away poofing the feathers in satisfaction, soooo funny!A year and a half????Omgosh...that will kill me...
