Where did this come from? Chick genetics guess anyone?

Don't you love what you actually get versus theory. I'm constantly confused by what I see, especially if one parent is a cross.

I took this statement from Henk on a question about making buff. Could maybe Db in an EE hen be somehow masking black? This may be totally out of context but why not confuse the issue. Is that possibly a real dark brown instead of black?

Some factors in buff (eg Db darkbrown) have a badly documented effect on black that else won't show up in the calculator

If it is barring, it almost has to be from the Delaware, but that Delaware silver with a Welsummer should make that chick yellow, not that dark color. In any of your others, I’d think the barring would be noticeable. If it is from the Delaware, it is a rooster. Her barred gene is sex linked.

I’m wondering if the issue could be with the Welsummer rooster instead of a hen. I’m assuming you have one that is servicing all the hens? If this was some type of masked black in him, you’d think it would show up in some of the other chicks. I’m totally confused. It will be interesting to see how the chick feathers out.

Ridge, everyones seperated into breeding pens, so the Dels are all together, the EE's and Wellie roo are together and Speckleds are together. No mixing between those, at all. I coulda swore it was black down, but I'll take a closer look under better lighting later.

This chick sure is a cutie, but definetly a suprise!!!

I think that you are right in thinking that it came from your Dels.

It's not uncommon for some Dels to have either Barred Rocks or Columbian Rocks in them.

Chris

These Dels are a mix of Sandhill/Meier/Holtman lines, so I guess anything is possible...

I guess I'll keep hatching and see if any other chick anomaly pops up. I guess a "sport" from a "sport" would be quite fitting!

Thanks for commenting Chris!

Holstman or Horstman (as in Dick Horstman) If it is Dick Horstman, I know him and his birds are pure, Sandhill I don't know too much about but I know that some people were displeased with what they got from them, Meier Hatchery is OK but I have seen some of there breeding pens and I would say that it is quite possible that Barred Rock is crossed into there stock.

No, Janet Holtman (If I'm remembering correctly) not Dick Horstman.

Hmm, well that would explain the BR lookin chick.

I'll keep this updated as the chick gets older. I'm interested to see how he colors out.
