Where Is The Best Place To Live In The USA?

Hi there. I live in Ohio but lived in KY for more than 20 years, you can find some cheap stuff in KY still. Of course you're not near the coast. Kentucky has cheap taxes too. I pay 3x the property taxes in Ohio that I paid in Kentucky. But New York is even higher. Of course none of us live in Europe, by comparison the taxes are cheaper for you no matter where you go.

Good luck to you, the US certainly has a diverse landscape, I'm sure you can find something suitable. I have friends of friends who are from the UK that moved to Indiana, they love it. It doesn't do anything for me, but they sure enjoy their big farm.

I just been searching a few real estate sites and most houses seem to be made out of wood...

Is that normal?

Is that what makes them cheaper?

Doesn't that make them very high maintainance and therefore needing lots of repairs, what about termites etc...

Most of our houses are made out of brick and concrete.

Offspring - Depends on where you look, I think most housed are made of wood with plywood and such. But alot of those wooden houses can be covered in stucco, which is like a cement covering. And I live in a sandy soil area, termites are king in my area, so we all have to have termite protection as part of the real estate deal.

You have to have a contract with a pest company!

Room sizes seem to be MUCH bigger in the USA as well...

In the UK a single (childrens room) is about the length of a single bed and the width of a double bed...

Offspring, in NC and SC we have fire ants really bad. Nasty little boogers, they can and have killed cows and some people have been bitten by them and died from allergic shock.

New England does have a northern variety of termites...but a lot less voracious than their southern cousins. Probably because of the winters here. We have carpenter ants...but I sprinkle DE all around the perimeter of my home and that seems to keep them at bay. As with any region...you'll always have pests indigenous to that area.
I love researching that stuff!

Oh yes, and I believe North Carolina, along with fire ants, also have giant human-eating octopus, poisonous boa constrictors that hang from all the trees, and acid rainfall that eats through the paint on all SUV's and BMW's.

Homes in New England are generally smaller than the rest of the country...I think because its cheaper to heat in the winter. Also...I love the old New England Colonial homes. They just kept adding on till you've got like 5 houses connected...they are very long and narrow leading into the next addition. They are sometimes connected to the barn in some way also.
Another nice thing about NH and VT are the covered bridges...absolutely gorgeous and we kiss everytime we drive over one in honor of the nickname Kissing Bridges! My dd's always say EEEWWWWW!!
