Where Is The Best Place To Live In The USA?

Me too, blossom hen, I particularly adore the Oregon coast and have tried to justify moving there and starting a touristy kind of business. The only thing that stops me is the idea of Tsunamis.

Oh and I also agree with MeanQueen, in that Utah is gorgeous . . . just a touch too hot for a W. Washingtonian.

LOL I forgot to mention that we also have no earthquakes, no mudslides, no tornadoes, rarely a hurricane...maybe every 10 years or so and rarely droughts, if we do drought, our droughts are nothing compared to the mid west anyway. My DH doesn't make nearly what he is worth though, but it's worth it for the peace and quiet.

While Maine is beautiful and nearly perfect, it is also rather frigid in the winter.

I'm surprised a Mainiac would endorse the place to an outsider, though. I thought that just wasn't done around theya!

Did I miss the answer Are you gonna be looking to work or is this a retirement?

If retireing look into southern Ohio/West virginia. There is no work there, but the land is cheep and beautiful.

dont look anywhere from mid-virginia to conn on the east coast, You can look at the houses by me starting in the low600'000(not sure what part of 600,000 is low but they ;go up to 1,000,000 did I mention that it comes with spacious 1/4 acre lot.

If you want to go amish, Ohio and Indianna are much stricter when it comes to rules. You would probably want to go menonite, little more relaxed.

I saw you ar bringing your spouse with you, that is a good thing because if looking south of the mason dixon line they dont marry outside of thier own relatives, thier family trees usually only have one branch. They are still bitter about the cival war and think they could win this time they just dont relize that most of thier neighbors are not from the south and would be fighting them before they got out of thier own neighborhood. BUT YOU GOTTA LOVE THEM If it wernt for dreams they would have no reason to go on

It is definitly hot, LOVed it when I first moved down, now as I age its getting to be a bit much.

Oh yeh, Offspring you are going to have to learn the language.
Banger's mean something entirely different here.

I am western Canadian and moved to western US - no prob, right? Wrong. I am used to having REAL cowboys (lived in Calgary which is famous for its Stampede) around, one of my bosses where I used to work for here in Salt Lake City, would routinely show up with his pick-up towing a horse trailer......one day they had me answering phones. I went to put a call through to him and he said to "take a message, that he had to go see a man about a horse". So I relay this to the person on the phone.......EVERYBODY is laughing at me including my boss and the person on the other end of the phone.......apparently that phrase is a colloquialism for needing to use the loo.

I say if you want access to mountains, hills, ocean, coast, AND cultural diversity, come to the pacific northwest! As long as you do not live in downtown Seattle or Tacoma, you can find rural lands to live on for a decent price. (Down town 400k could barely get you a condo, in the country you can get a rambler on acreage with septic and city water) Plus, property values all around here are always climbing.

Avoid the city and you can have acreage that is within a day trip distance to the Puget Sound , home of the world's largest octopus, or even the pacific ocean. You can also be within a day's trip of the Olympic Penninsula that is fed by the warm air currents coming from the equator. For the mountains, just drive east and before you know it, you'll be in the Cascade mountains ! If you want some good skiing or mountain sports, go north to Canada's Whistler , that's pretty close too and a beautiful place to see.

AND the BEST part about the (greater Seattle area): Although it may sprinkle rain half the year, our summers do not kill us with heat and our winters do not freeze us to death. Year round, the daily temperatures will swing at MOST 25 deg from daily high to daily low. Summer highs normally in the 70's with maybe a few weeks in the 80's and 90's range and occasionally a days reaching the head line news of 100 deg F. Winter lows are maybe some snow and a few weeks of freezing weather... and when I say freezing, not sub zero, just in the 30's type with maybe a few days of temps in the night time low of the teens.

I just have a few preferences:

I would love to be somewhere that's fairly close to the coast and woodland (although it's not essential).

Pacific NW has this for sure! You can stand at the coast and see the mountains in some areas. Olympic peninsula is a great place for woods alright! So is most of the state on this (coast) side of the mountains.

I do not want to live in a rough neighborhood.

Just avoid the cities here... and compared other cities, we are bad in traffic but not so bad in people. People I find are very nice in the city, just impatient when it comes to traffic. Plus, there are wonderful hospitals for children, primary care, cancer care, geriatric care and emergency care in Seattle. We have Harborview Medical center and the UW medical center if anything does happen to you and your family.

The type of property must have a few outbuildings (small barn/stable etc.) and at least 1-2 acres of land as a minimum to grow fruit and veg and to keep animals on such as chickens and possibly goats, pigs, sheep, cows etc.

This can be done EASILY as long as you are not in the city... or heck... even in the city! Just cost's more to do in the city. If you find a property in Snohomish county, you can see it's value here.

The property I choose to buy would need to be fairly cheapish (less than $400,000)

Very easily done.
To give you an example, the 7 acres I live on in a very incorporated city area 20 min w/o traffic from Seattle, is appraised at 2000 times the worth of the 40 acres 50 minutes from Seattle, that is appraised at a value just below your maximum cost. Get a chunk of land a quarter of that size and build yourself a 300k home from a builder and install any type of septic or city water you want... even well water in some areas. If you are in land called RA5, RA 10, or rural, you can build anything to your hearts desire. When you do look for land though, make sure it is not low land and does not flood.

The only down side to this area is that things can be expensive. I hear though the costs of stuff like food and the like decrease as you get away from Seattle. I bet fuel prices would be less than what you are paying now anyways!
