I'm from New Jersey, and despite all the misconceptions, there are tons and tons of farmland out here. Not all of New Jersey is one big city.
I'm currently attending school in south Jersey, but I'm from North Jersey. When my parents bought our house eight years ago, they paid $170,000 for five acres, a ranch house and a stone/cement barn. The house needed some work and we ended up putting an addition on it as well. Because of all the work we did to our house, it would be worth MUCH more now, but that's just because we put so much into the land and the house. Right now the real estate market is not going well at all. NOTHING is selling! You could probably bargain for a great price.
North Jersey is hilly and the appalachian mountains run along my area. South Jersey is completely flat. Everywhere is somewhere and there's always stores and places within an hour drive. Extreme South Jersey is covered with lots of farm, especially in Salem County. South Jersey you have Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and in North Jersey, you have New York City and PA right there.
New Jersey has probably some of the best weather in the country. Warm summers, snowy winters (except by the shore and we don't receive feet of snow, just little bits here and there). We have a beautiful fall and no hurricanes or earthquakes. There are very, very, very few tornadoes, if any at all and we don't have many pests other than mosquitoes. We've only had termites once in our old house, but that's because a tree branch was touching the roof.
In south jersey we have the pinelands. My college owns 1600 acres of it, but there are thousands and thousands of acres...all protected. It's beautiful down here and the pine lands is actually larger than most other national parks, including Yellowstone (and a a bunch of others).
Taxes can be high, but probably no higher than what you are paying now. There are also always jobs available around here. People from NY and PA commute HERE for jobs.
My friend is trying to sell his house and their property is beautiful. I might be able to find a link for you to look and compare.
