WHere is your brooder???

Mine is in the coop. I put together an area that is right at half the size of the coop. So that makes their brooder about 5x6 feet. Pretty good size I'd say.

I have mine in the 3 season room which is between the kitchen and garage. It doesn't smell, but the dust is awful. Glad they're moving to the coop this weekend.

I had them in my master bathroom for the first four weeks and that last 3 weeks in the livingroom in larger quarters. I have never had a smell in the house. I scoop the shavings daily and completely clean out once a week. Now at 7 weeks old, they have some Sweet PDZ mixed in their bedding.

People have come in the house and been surprised to find out there were chickens in it because they did not smell them. So, just keep it clean and you should do fine.

Mine are in an old horse trough in the basement. I change the litter every 5-6 days, and I have 19 chicks in there. I haven't noticed any poo smells at all, not even in the basement. Dust? Haven't noticed that, either, but then again, my basement's pretty dusty as it is (unfinished).

I've got mine in a rubbermaid tote in my bedroom. There are five chicks together and one separated. I had them on towels over newspaper for awhile but got sick of washing the towels. They are about 10 days now and I just switched to pine shavings, which makes a huge difference. With the towels I was changing every day. With the shavings I just stir it up and scoop out the chunks. I don't think the chicks stink at all. Unfortunately, I've got three ducks in there in their own tote and the are awful! Stinky, messy little buggers! But they sure are cute...

Cetawin, where did you get the sweet PDZ? I asked when I bought feed yesterday and the owner said he hadn't stocked it in years.

Susan

I got it a local feed store. About 12.00 for 50#.

Mine is in the hallway on top the dryer. ITs just a big plastic container. They are nearly a week old and I freshen up the litter every day, its been changed twice once because the dog knocked it over (she thinks they are her babies) which is why its now on the dryer and once because my son knocked it over. But I dont notice any smell. I do like the cheeper pine bedding better because its shaved finer and more absorbant and I keep newspaper in the bottom. In a few weeks it will be warm enough here to move them to their coop when they start to get bigger and poop more.
