Sorry to hear about the attack. How did that happen? Do you have a secure coop and run or were they out free ranging? Please do post some pics in the emergency forum and share your story.

I posted a thread to tell the story about how the attack happened, I trust most of your questions will be answered in the thread and there are also a couple of pictures of the wounds. I shared the link in my previous post.

We do not have a coop and the chickens were free ranging in the yard at the time of the attack. We are now planning to build a coop in a fenced of area in the yard for the chickens. I guess having a dog around (especially a high drive protection dog) will always be a high risk, no matter how well the dog is trained.

Thank you for the tips on going forward. When we have the coop ready we will get more hens, do you think 1 rooster : 5 hens will be ok for a start? I know you recommended 1 : 10 but I would like to have less chickens at first. I am having a hard time to keep 2 alive cant imagine 10 chickens, not until we have more experience.

Hi @Bamabexchicks that quote from Willa Cather saved my rooster's life. If it was not for my mom and the quote I would have given up. But the quote reminded me that if I do whatever I can with all the love I possibly can then I can expect a miracle to happen. And then a miracle did happen! Thank you for providing the links, I read a couple of the threads on the emergencies forum and I now have even more hope that Frikkie will recover! I am inspired to continue giving Frikkie intensive care as long as required.
