where to get an adult cat?????

I have recently lost a long time family pet, she was at least 15 years old when she passed. Please do not tell me a shelter or rescue, the local ones insist that the cats MUST be declawed and INDOOR only. I would like to allow the cat to go out (with supervision at first) and by it's self for short periods of time to roam/hunt/potty and have "me" time outside without people around. I have done this for years with my cats (I am in my 40's and only have been catless 2 or 3 times for no more than 8-10 months) and have had few problems with it, I even had times when I had a large amount of outdoor kitties. but I don't know of people whom have an adult non-feral cat that has not been declawed that needs to be re-homed.

Check your local Craigslist. The one here in my area has tons of them they are trying to re-home.

It is irresponsible and inhumane for the shelter to insist that any cat be declawed. When I bought my Ragdoll kitten the breeder required that he not be declawed. She also insisted he be neutered and be an indoor cat only. With this I totally agree. Cats that are outside are vulnerable to all sorts of misfortunes from attacks by predators to attacks by people out to harm them to getting hit by cars. Plus, depredations by cats is a major factor in the decline of the numbers of many songbirds. That said, look on craigslist and/or your local veterinary clinics. There are often pets needing homes posted on their bulletin boards.

I think it's great you're going to let a cat be cat! They need to get outside for fresh air and sunshine, maybe a few birds here and there, a couple crickets. We never kept our cats indoors if they didn't want to be, and certainly never had them declawed. Hurray for old scool real life! It's a refreshing return to the normal side of the world.

I agree with checking on Craigslist and also your local Facebook market.... Around my parts we also have county yard sale pages similar to Craigslist. An example is gowilkes.com. (I'm in NC so don't know if they have that in Indiana but it's "go" followed by the county name....).

Definitely try CL and the book though. I have a couple barn cats and thank God for them. They keep snakes and mice and other small pests away from my critters!

Let your Veterinarian know, sometimes people find cats and bring them to their Vet for placement.

Agree with others, Craigslist, FB, asking your vet. I am really surprised the local shelters are insistent on those two things, being as overrun as they are with cats and kittens. I'm familiar with your area and I have seen alot of pleas for adoption and donations from shelters in your area on the Indianapolis news.

I'm disappointed in my local cat rescue as well. When I moved to my current residence, (18 acres out in the country with a lot of woods and some old farm buildings) I was looking to get a few barn cats to keep the mice population down. I contacted the local cat rescue, and they would not let me adopt any of their cats because they want all their cats to have inside homes! They acted like me wanting outside cats was a sin! This same group pleads on facebook daily asking for monetary donations, supplies, foster homes and adoptions. I quit donating to them. I grew up on a farm and you cannot live out in the country without cats - you would be overrun by mice and rats. I don't know what fantasy world the owner of the rescue grew up in.

I don’t understand shelters. I haven’t had cats in years as hubs is allergic but when I went to adopt a dog they wouldn’t adopt to me because I had a doggie door. I understand they don’t want runners to get lost but I had a six foot board on board privacy fence with locked hates. As sad as it is to say I dogs are my children and live better than many kids in this country. Now I just go to breed specific rescue groups. I don’t know if there is such a thing for cats.

A friend had a feral cat have kittens under a bush in her yard and I found homes for three of the kittens. They will all be outdoor barn cats. I’m sure there are kittens out there like that if you ask around. Don’t know about adult cats, that will be tricky.

You are forgetting kids with BB guns, people who use cats for target practice and worse, marauding dogs, hawks, owls, coyotes and other predators, and passing cars. Your cat may be lucky enough to avoid all these perils. Or maybe not. I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice.

My opinion is that life has risks. Hiding yourself, or something else, from life because we/it might get hurt only inhibits yourself or that which you restrict. Life is meant to be lived.
