Where were you when the world stopped turning? Remembering 9.11.2001

Not to mention, you were not even in the United States at that time, were you? I believe this would be a thread for folks who were.

I was in grade 9 - Math class. They announced it on the PA system and called an assembly, where we watched news and went home at lunch hour. They closed school that day, and everyone was in shock. I remember asking my dad if the world was going to end.

I won't recognise that disgraceful, disrespectful and unfeeling post with a response more than this. 9/11 affected many people of many nationalities around the world and still does. Please calm down and show respect.

My world did STOP for a little while. I was in a church service when I found out. It was a church service at a private Christian college. Many of the students had family in NY and I had a mother in the area. It was scary and our world did STOP for a little bit. All the phone lines were down and we could not get in touch with our love ones. Yes, my world has gone on... BUT it did stop for a while. I was part of the group that wondered if I was going to see my love ones again. . . .

The song is a beautiful song and does a great job of expressing the emotions during that time. I remember the fear and I remember the generosity of the American Spirit. I remember the folks lining up to give blood. EVERYONE was giving blood. America was immobilized, paralyzed for a short time. What was truly amazing is how we dealt with the situation. We could of became a bitter and angry people. Instead, we came together to help each other.

I don't want to go any further with this post because I don't want to give any trolls material to get started with. The long and short of the response - Is YES I remember where I was. Yes, my world did stop turning for a short period of time. Yes, I think America is great and did a great job of coming together after this tragedy!

I tend to agree with Cynthia, my world did not stop and America's world did not stop either. We paused, regrouped and started kicking some ***. We did not climb in a hole or hide behind pacifism. We are a world leader and should act accordingly and I think we did exactly that by the resources we spent in a land much closer to the beloved EU who spent relatively little in comparison to the US. (rant over)

Now I did order something online right before 9/11 and it what was overnight delivery became a 2 week wait.

I actually went to work, worked a normal day and said a few prayers...

Phones rang and TVs were switched on in homes and workplaces and everyone watched in shock and disbelief. Most people said that nothing of their normal daily routine was done for the remainder of the day.

As I watched, stunned, as the towers collapsed, I remembered that my son had been in of them one two years earlier and I thought how vulnerable we all are to the unexpected, whether it's a natural event or man made.

I live in Canada, and we felt just as helpless I'm sure (except those people in NY of course - they must have felt the strongest - no denying that).

I was just a child, and I was terrified. I remember my parents crying. Of course the world didn't stop turning. It's all most of us could think about for quite some time though.

Though the targets were on American soil, the effect of the events of 911 were very much international (this is from Wikipedia):


The terrorist September 11 attacks by Al-Qaeda resulted in almost 3,000 immediate (attack time) deaths, including the 19 hijackers and 2,977 victims.[1] 372 foreign nationals(excluding the 19 perpetrators) perished in the attacks, representing just over 12% of the total. The immediate deaths include 246 victims on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in New York City in the World Trade Center and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon.[2][3] About 292 people were killed at street level by burning debris and falling bodies of those who had jumped or fallen from the World Trade Center's windows. All the deaths in the attacks were civilians except for 55 military personnel killed at the Pentagon.[4] Some immediate victims were not added to the list until years later.
More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center.[5] The foreign countries with the highest losses are the United Kingdom (including the British overseas territory of Bermuda) with 67, the Dominican Republic with 47, and India with 41.

This is what I meant when I told my husband "we have joined the rest of the world."

There is more than one stereotypical way to feel about this event. It's disrespectful to pigeonhole every person's feelings into one certain way to look at it and gang up on them if they don't see things the same way as you do. speckledhen is entitled to her opinion as well as anyone else. thaiturkey, if you wanted to ignore something, you sure didn't do that. You just keep on bringing it up. Best drop it now or you are just starting a fight.
