I got into chickens a year ago, I decided on Silkie because I was looking for a chicken that would make a good pet, and also eats bugs and scratch at horse manure.

Now I am interested in also having a few chickens for eggs. My bf will be building me a seperate coop and run, I am thinking maybe five hens. I want hens that are good layers but also are friendly. Which breed should I be looking at?

My red sex links are the sweetest girls. They were the first to start laying and have been faithfully laying one large (or XL double-yolked as the case was today) egg a day.

My Easter Eggers are really sweet, and they lay well too!

Red or black sex links would be my choice too. I don't make pets of my chickens but the sex link birds I have had or have now allow me to approach them and, if their mood is right, pick them up without screaming bloody murder. They also allow other chicks to be blended in with them without harassing them. I'm leery of BR--one of the meanest roosters I ever had was a BR.

Which brings up another thing about the sex links--about 99.9% sure of sex so you'll get layers, not some hormonal, territorial crazed roosters.
