I hatched two CCL and thought one was a male. One was clearly lighter, disconnected stripe down the back, and white spot on the head. Gave “him” away for free, and “he’s” laid an egg before the girl I did keep. :th It was my first experience with them. You’re right though, that one wouldn’t be ideal for breeding. See pic!

There is no SOP for Silverudd’s Blue (just a breeder’s guide) I’ll attach that too. They sell for $15-$20 each here. I bought one (a splash) last spring for $20, and it’s a boy!:hitI'm having him tested to see if he is homozygous for the blue egg gene, which I don’t have confidence he is. Hoping at least heterozygous :fl !!View attachment 2483644
Yes, I have this guide. Thank you for sharing it. My handsome cockerel isn't perfect, by any means, but "perfect Silverudd's Blue" are absolutely gorgeous! They look very prestigious, in my opinion. Since I don't have a Silverudd's Blue pullet or hen, I'm going to breed My Silverudd's Blue cockerel (Is he called a Blue Silverudd's Blue if he is Blue?) to my Swedish Black pullet, in hopes of getting something similar to a Swedish Blue. This certainly would not be to sell or anything like that. It'd just be for my pleasure. I love light leakage on jet black!
Please let us know what you decide on. I'm super excited for you

Do you agree about the CCLs pic I shared?

It is interesting to note how experiences differ. I've had chickens almost all of my life. I was raised with chickens and so were my kids.
I've had very few nasty roos. The one thing I will cull for in a heartbeat is a people aggressive rooster. I have never had a nasty Ameraucana and I have never known a nice Leghorn. My mother gave up on the breed they were so vicious and as an adult I don't care for the breed.
My white eggs are produced by sweet California Greys.

Are your roosters "pets"? Or are they treated like roosters and not feathered dogs? (I have heritage turkeys and the VAST majority of people that have toms that are aggressive towards them treatthem like feathered dogs. So the birds have ZERO respect/fear of humans.) I was wondering if roosters tend to be the same way or not.

They are raised within the flock but all my birds are used to us, free range around the house or some were purchased as eggs and incubator hatched and brooded in the garage or some chicks I got as babies. But even those hatched and/or brooded in the house went out into the grow out pen and joined the flock ASAP. If a young cockerel I was interested in seemed full of himself, he quickly got tosses into the main flock.
Now the funny part is we have the nicest roosters who do their job well and are fine with other pets and people.
The nastiest roosters we have had are those that were raised as pets and people asked if "we could turn them around," Mostly didn't happen, Even with all the tips given on this forum which is why I would cull a people aggressive rooster and never breed from him.
Interestingly, the reason I literally hate leghorns is I was raised with nice chickens and my mother was a teacher.
This was in the day and age when kids got colored peeps for Easter and didn't know how to care for them. Those that survived were kept as pets until they outgrew their cardboard box and were then rehomed. The kids knew my mother had a small farm and would ask her to take their half grown peeps. She felt sorry for them so she did.
Every last one was a rooster and they were all mean. The kids had to carry sticks to fend them off, And they still never learned., even when I knocked done out. He got up and kept chasing me.
My mother actually took chicks for two years thinking the first year was an anomaly but the second year gave a repeat performance.
We had our own roosters with never a problem and I had my own flock of bantams. My mom told a neighbor if the "white roosters disappeared, she wouldn't mind, and lo, and behold, they did. And I have heartedly disliked leghorns to this day.
Most people in our rural community have chickens (and kids) and if we have nice tempered young roosters we hold onto them incase someone needs a flock rooster.

Thank you for that. Exactly what I figured!

They have arrived!!! 22 shipped eggs from foxfire farms half Crested Cream Legbar and half Silverudd’s Blue. I also got some local eggs that are Welsummer and 2 Welsummer/starlight green egger mix and 2 Welsummer/ CCL mix. Then my Ameraucana just started laying yesterday so I got 2 of her eggs!!

How exciting! Hope you have a great hatch!!

I’ve heard a lot that Isbars have a limited gene pool and difficulties breeding.

I voted Bielefelder because they’re the most dual purpose of the bunch and known for very docile roosters. Bonus times 100, they’re auto sexing.
