Just thought this might be helpful to some... : ) I like sizing my eggs..

I have some golden comets and just got some barred rocks and the golden comets eggs are almosttwo times as big as the barred rocks when i go to put the eggs in a carton some i have to almost squezze into the cartoon.

my golden comet usually lays large fat dark brown eggs but my white leggern she has given us 6 double yolkers so far that are HUGE havent gotten to measure them yet

I am also interested in finding out which breeds lay jumbo eggs, preferably brown eggs. We will be getting chickens for the first time this spring. Any advice appreciated:)

Thank you. We haven't bought any chickens yet, so I'm researching which ones to try.

I think it's extremely variable between strains, and also somewhat dependent on nutrition and age of the bird. Several posters mentioned BO eggs being very large. I've seen BO eggs, not from pullets that were not very big at all. My 3 EE (same breed, same hatchery) lay any thing from a medium to an extra large. I vote for overall consistency of size for the leghorn. IMO they are very good with feed conversion, and if you compare the size of the egg to the size of the bird, they win the contest. Down side of leghorns is their flighty nature, and their large combs.
