you would think people were smarter than this. Like, 20 years ago, no one was getting their a** stomped by annoyed bison because they weren't stupid.

True. Bison were almost extinct because of people back in the day.

I think I have been seeing it on the news a good bit lately where people are trying to pet buffalo and getting messed up but I hardly pay attention

When we were in the Smoky Mountains last week staying in a condo right by the Strip in Gatlinburg my daughter came running out of her bedroom saying bear bear and ran out on the balcony.

She said she was looking out her window (we were on the 7th floor) and there was a bear walking on the patio of the single story hotel across the street. We could not see it when we got out there, but there were people down at the pool that also saw it and were going over there in the dark trying to find it. Luckily they did not find it.

Sure they were. I used to go up to South Dakota every year and it happened every year.
Most were thinking photo ops. I imagine with cell phones with nice cameras it's increased quite a bit
