When falling from a great height, it isn't the initial impact that kills you usually, that just breaks every bone in your body, it is the bounce that does it. Shattered bones destroy internal organs.

Bird bones are a whole lot lighter, and much less dense. This helps cut down on weight, so that there is less mass to deal with maybe?
