Which chicks to choose

I'm not thrilled with my SS for laying. The eggs are barely a med. in size and tend to have lots of bumps on them. These are Ideal hatchery birds for what that's worth. My BSL, the lay larger eggs, more eggs, they are also prettier eggs. IMO

1 of my susses did try to go broody last year, I kept taking the eggs so I don't know if she would have been successful or not.
 
Do you mean a hatchery Rhode Island Red when you say Production? If so then yes! Those and any of the sex links will be excellent layers.
 
The Black Australorp holds the record for egg laying.
