Which hatchery has the best Bantam Cochins?

Since posting your question, did you ever place an order? You CAN end up with crap birds from breeders and good looking birds from hatcheries. Are you likely to find the best Cochins in the world from some of the big hatcheries?...probably not. Is it possible to buy really nice cochins through a hatchery?...sure! Also, take advice from people who have actually ordered from hatcheries and LOVE their birds. Often times they are less jaded than those that show regularly. Just remember, you often times get what you pay for. Who cares if they are or are not show quality if you aren't going to show! The OP isn't asking who on this planet earth has the best bantam cochins? You can buy eggs from SQ parents, and hatch out pet quality birds. Keep that in mind in your pursuit!

Jerseygirl...good for YOU for even showing your birds! Most people don't go that far with their birds. More power to you!

OP - may I sidetrack just a bit?? Just this morning I was looking over the "show birds" at the KY State Fair. I found it funny that, to me, many of the birds did not seem very pretty at all. Probably, most were at least close to "standards of perfection" for their breeds. But I guess I'm use to my beautiful (to me) hatchery birds, which evidently AREN'T close to correct standards. But I honestly thought my birds were prettier (healthier, shinier feathers, brighter eyes, smaller builds, etc.). So if I had little hatchery cochins that looked like GardeNerds, I'd be thrilled!!

What she said!

I met Neil at Nationals last year. He is very nice and very knowledgeable, but I also know Marilyn and know her birds ARE gorgeous!

I ordered cochins from a smaller hatchery here in ohio called Eagles Nest. They are family owned and breed towards the APA standard.....however, because they have so many breeds, they may not be as good as a private cochin breeder. They are probably the nicest cochins I have seen from a hatchery. Gary Overton judged our breeding birds at the county fair this year and he complemented my pair.

I'm sorry to disagree, but I got a trio from Ideal, and they won Best in Show at the Poultry show last year- they were stunning

I really think it depends on where the hatchery gets their stock from

MOST hatchery Cochins, regardless of the hatchery, are poor quality. Not all but most.

Also not all Shows are APA sanctioned. Not meaning to be rude, just saying the facts.

Especially County Fairs - Not sanctioned, thus, you can enter even an Easter Egger and often win.

The original question was: Which HATCHERY has the best bantam cochin? How is "Most hatchery Cochin, regardless of the hatchery, are poor quality" helping the OPs question at all?

Illia was stating an opinion on a comment made in this thread and contributing to the topic... In a way she did answer the op's question. If you are looking for quality Cochins, it's better to buy from a breeder instead of getting dissapointed when majority of your Cochins from a hatchery have faults.
