Which rare breed LF should I get into? Suggestions, please!

A truly cool and interesting rare breed you could get into is Manx Rumpies. They are a rumpless breed from the middle east. They're very hardy, great layers and good broodies (although their fertility can be poor due to being rumpless), can allegedly live very well on just free range, have long lifespans, come in a wide range of colors, and many lay brown or colored eggs. I have two manx rumpy/barred rock mixes and they are awesome! One is rumpless, one is not. My two best layers, actually--I find one light green and one olive egg nearly every day regardless of the weather or season. There isn't a lot of information out there about them unfortunately but you can find little bits here and there. I highly recommend this breed, they are fascinating.

If I was more of a LF person I would probably breed them, but as it is I prefer to stick with bantams for the most part.

Do a lot of research first is my suggestion, and see what you fall in love with. I think when you find the breed you want to work with, you'll know it. I also recommend attending a larger poultry show if you can--it helps to see the birds in person and be able to talk to the breeders.

I have a lovely hatchery Golden Campine. She is a delight. Until the last couple of days she was pretty flighty, though, and they have fairly large combs so that might be an issue in the cold.

She is the smallest of my chickens, but she is the bossiest. She is Miss personality, though. She squawked and flew at my DH's truck the first time he drove in when they were free in the yard. She puts herself between any invader and the flock. In addition, she is striking in appearance. She squatted for me yesterday (at 20.5 weeks). The second picture really captures her true attitude.

I also have 2 Delawares who are the sweetest, friendliest chickens in the group. Again, they are hatchery (MPC) girls, but their color is lovely, and the true breeder chicks are gorgeous. The picture was at 20.5 weeks.

Yesterday Angel (the Dellie) hopped into my lap and settled down for a nap on the patio while I was out visiting with them.

Can you tell I really like my girls.

I love my Sumatras. They aren't as rare as some, but are fairly uncommon. They are beautiful birds, but their temperaments could use some work, though.

I also loved my heritage Orpingtons. They were huge, though and very friendly birds. They also have a smaller comb and do better in colder climates.

Langhshans are another breed I liked. They are absolutely huge. A friend of my had a few and her big roo would sit in her lap. He took up the whole lap!

What's wrong with your Sumatra's temperaments? Are they mean to you or other chickens? Mine are absolutely wonderful!

Sure, you don't want to house the roo with another rooster but he'll eat out of my hand, minds my space and he's VERY gentle with the hens. As far as the hens, they eat out of my hand as well and fly up to my arm for "pets."

Oh and to the OP...

Where do you live? You don't have to be really specific--but a state & climate would be nice...

If you're somewhere mild--Redcaps or Buttercups would be a great breed to work on. They need help badly...or white faced black Spanish. I've tried those but due to their huge combs and our wet, -25 winters, I couldn't keep them from getting frostbitten combs.

If you're somewhere with harsh winters...

Large fowl buff or dark Brahmas are awesome....Buckeyes, Rhode Island Whites (which are rosecomb) or Dominiques would be good for you...
