It was just before dawn, the darkest hour, and Lightning lay awake beside a pool of water at the edge of the forest. Her son's slept deeply on either side of her, their bellies round and bulging with mice. The white cat knew by intuition her grand-kits had been born, but also knew Cherry needed her rest before they invaded her den to inspect the little dears.

The new litter was giving her cold old heart softness, and she was deep in thought about times long ago. About when she had birthed Rumble and Sand. They had been the first litter shed actually wanted, and the first that she bore in a safe place. The nearly full moom reflected in the calm pool before her reminded her of her mates huge, soulful blue eyes. Hed come back for her many times once she was taken to the old farm. But his strange appearance made him an outcast. The clans didn't accept him, the two legs were disgusted with him. Cats told her it was un-natural for two breeds to mix and called her horrible things. The same Toms that tried to befriend her because of her beauty beat her mate senseless brutally and often, just because of his pelt. They could never be seen in public together without a huge, violent scene.

The beautiful old cat sighed heavily. He'd promised nothing would seperate them, no amount of hate from other cats would spoil their love. But when her litter came, he wasn't there. Sands was naked and she was fearful for him. Her mate never returned and shed become resentful of Sands resemblance and of the heavy burden of his defense she was now forced to provide alone. The cruel ways she'd learned in the mill returned. She couldn't bring herself to eat Sand, but she would carry him out to the barn and leave him beneath the clumsy cattle. But somehow he always got back into the house.

Her glittering golden eyes watched Sands bare skin move as he breathed evenly in his peaceful sleep. A pain went through her, deep inside. Unable to control herself, she cried out loudly in heartbreak. It was the same gut wrenchingly melancholy cry she used that got a a huge Rex cat to release her from her cage many, many moons ago. Her thin, high pitched voice echoed her mates name across the water and into the two legs city beyond. There was no answer. The strength of her howling had forced moisture from her eyes. It dribbled down her snowy white cheeks where it settled and sparkled like diamonds on her white fur.
