I am thinking about getting a pair but trying to avoid some of the "issues" I have read. Would having a pair of females work rather than a male/female pair? Would I avoid some of the aggressiveness during breeding season then? Also, I am hoping to keep them to help keep the grass/clover down, so they would be out free ranging with my chickens (and some runner ducks, probably).....does that work? I have about a half acre of mostly grass and weeds. Can add a kiddie pool or something of that sort. 4 foot fencing.

I have a male female pair of brown chinese geese. Mine are not super aggressive and actually its the female that is more aggressive. Mine are with my ducks and chickens all day and have become quite friendly with the ducks. They are great for keeping the grass down too, I also have about a half acre of cleared property that is grass and I didnt have to mow it at all last spring and summer. My female can fly a little bit but I have sucessfully been keeping them in a 4 foot fence for some months now and they do not often escape. I also use kiddie pools but have several as the geese usually dominate one and wont let the ducks in when they are using it. Overall I have really enjoyed my geese and Im sure if you get some you will too!

I would guess if you had only females you'd have a lot less aggression. Ganders are almost always aggressive. Up until she started laying my female goose was a submissive little sweetie but then she got a head on her when she started to nest. Not nearly as aggressive as the gander, not as good at biting or wing slapping, but definitely agitated.

I have american lavenders (a version of the american buff), so they are milder mannered or supposed to be.

Any female goose I've ever had were wallflowers and timid in comparison to the boys, so you're thinking along the right lines.

Two years ago I would have told you about my very aggressive female Toulouse . . . who never laid a single egg, and who I now realize was a gander. She loved ME and protected me from everyone and everything. She and I never knew the truth, though. I can see the difference now that I have more experience in the behavior differences between the sexes. She was definitely a he.
