White Copper Maran cockerel?

Chickens are a species. Marans are a breed. Black Copper is a variety.
certified FBCM breeder
 - rolling my eyes at the breeder, not you. Certified my foot. She may be certified by the state to sell poultry, but that does not mean the birds are quality.

FBCM stands for French Black Copper Marans.

There are two standards of Marans in the US, although the APA is pushing for the French variety (feathered legs) over the UK variety (clean legs). Both types of Marans were imported to the US in small numbers after WWII with larger imports occuring 15-20 years ago. Like everything Americans touch we started breeding them (on the whole) for quantity, not quality. Clean-legged and feather-legged birds were crossed together, varieties were crossed. I myself had a pen of birds that threw Cuckoo, Black Copper, and Birchin Marans. All anyone cared about was dark eggs. They along with the Welsummers, Barnevelders, and Penedesencas were selling for exorbitant prices. Many years later people began to focus their efforts on the feather-legged Marans and the clean-legged have fallen to the wayside. I myself prefer the clean legs.

Anyway, looking at the quality of the birds as well as some of the wording she has used, I'd say that she, like so many others, sees trendy varieties of chicken and is trying to make a quick buck. Many breeds fall prey to these people including Lavender Orpingtons, Blue-laced Red Wyandottes, and Ayam Cemani, to name a few pure bred birds. When you add in the abhorrent designer mutts that lay pretty eggs the list increases exponentially.

The girls may surprise you and lay some really dark eggs, but I honestly wouldn't hold my breath. They'll be great layers, but I probably wouldn't set out to breed more from those birds. I would search for some quality Marans from a breeder that is more reputable. I don't currently work with them any more, but I remember Wade Jeane and Bev Davis being big names in the Marans world.

Thanks for breaking it me gently. But it's a good lesson that lead me to ACCURATE INFORMATION. I appreciate that. Dang. And yes, I think I was going to breed a flock for fertilized eggs to sell or chicks so thank you for saving me from future emberassment that was sure to come.

There are a lot of terms I'm learning too. Thank you for patiently guiding me through my newbie ignorance 😂
