The young leghorn pullets I bought are young enough to not have red combs yet, still very light pink and have not started maturing in that area yet, however the rooster has, and almost reached a full comb, but not started to lay over sideways yet. Both rooster and hens are still chirping yet. Here's my questions

At what age will the hens comb start to develope and turn red? And how long after it starts developing will they begin to lay?Another thing is some of the hens have almost pure white legs, and some are a hardy yellow color, why is this?

Is there a growth and development chart on this site somewhere?

I am not sure on born date, so this is my only clue to go on, and I find it funny the roosters had all developed their combs so much earlier than the hens. Thanks

I cant help you with the white legs.. (see my pics to compare colors?idk...) But my white leghorns combs got bigger around week twelve and then again closer to lay but it's varied. I have two who have big full bright red combs and 1 is laying...started today ;-) She has been big and red for about 3 weeks now. The other one got red about a week ago but seems to be filling out that big comb and waddles faster. The other three are starting to get red in the face and waddles but noone's had the huge comb growth yet like those two. I'm am not kidding you when I say this... it seems to happen overnight. One day they're a little pink around the waddles and eyes and the next day- WHAMMO you think you've grown a roo overnight! They are all twenty weeks now so the first one started about 17 weeks...maybe 16 and a half or so but unfortunantly I dont have any leghorn roo's to tell you about. Good luck! And let me know if you want to know anything else, I love talking leghorns :)

You have a neat page!! Do you have a picture of them now to see what the comb development looks like at the time of laying? Nice coop by the way! I think I enjoy watching those beautiful white things more than any of my other chickens. I think the red ones are evil, and my barred rocks are really laid back.

silly question do I have pictures?! ;-)

Although, I dont have a ton of them with their big girl combs...
first one is the girl that laid yesterday and today! taken about a week ago

same chicken around 10 weeks

actually... lol gonna sound dumb but do you have facebook? That's where all of my pics are and if you do I'll just add you as a friend otherwise I'll pick and choose the good ones lol. I just realized I havent really uploaded pictures on here except the egg ones in about 3 months!

Here is a pic of one of my White Leghorns taken two weeks before she started laying (20 weeks old). Hope it helps.

Here was my girl July 1st.

She started laying August 1st. Exactly 1 month after that picture. At 19 weeks.

Here she was the day after she started laying.

Here she is 1-2 weeks after she started laying (basically this week).

My OTHER white leghorn pullet, from the same batch as this layer, just started laying August 12th. Her comb development followed the same pattern as her "sister".

Hope that helps you.

Oh good! A spot specific to White Leghorns! I've been hunting around a bunch online and asking my neighbor in back of us who has a white leghorn if our Cupcake (see pictures below) is a hen or a roo. The neighbor thinks hen. The chicken is 17 1/2 weeks old and I'm REALLY hoping for a hen, but I figure this is a great place to put up pictures and see what you think. Either way, hen or roo, please let me know what it is about our Cupcake that makes you think that's what we have:
