White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Quote:
I believe they represent what the Original leghorns were good at, Laying Large white eggs and lots of them. I believe they are the closest thing to the original breed standar before there were any breed standard or chickes were shown..

I have 3 chickens and one of them is a White Leghorn named Pearl. At first she was my least favorite because she was so flighty and nervous around humans. I could never get close to her. Then she started laying eggs. She was the first layer too. Now she is the friendliest one. She comes running up to see me whenever they are free ranging in the backyard and I go outside. One night we were sitting on the deck near dusk and the other girls went to bed and she flies over to us and sits on the top of the chair. She just hung out with us and I had to carry her back to the coop and put her to bed. She is the smallest of the 3 but definitely the alpha one. I think some people call them a forgotten breed because they are known as the commercial egg layer and they have white eggs?

May be true; however, the leggerns are "so common" that they are no where near the "flavor of the month" chickens like BLRW or Choc Orps or anything Lavendar.

Don't get me wrong, I like those "flavor" chickens.

Just going back to the point that relatively, there aren't that many breeders of WL around..only in chicken houses for grocery store egg production.

I love mine. I only have one. She was flighty as heck as a chick, but has gotten very friendly since laying. She is always talking to me and will follow me around, even after I've fed them and everyone else is eating. She also lays a pretty white egg almost every day without fail. No one wants white eggs, or a common breed like them but I love mine, wish I would have got one to start with.

My four Trader Joe's WLs are great birds, very pretty, the hens are wonderful layers, and the roo is a gorgeous example of the breed as far as I am concerned. His comb is so large I am afraid that if he doesn't turn to face winds,he might get blown over!

You think so? Gee, it's hard to imagine hatcheries and commercial farms being the best source of chickens!

I know Leghorns were developed for egg-laying purposes, but I still think breeder birds are better than commercial strains because breeder WL's don't usually have as many health problems as commercial WL's.
