I just redid the lid on an old chick tractor / integration pen type thing I built some time ago. Panels in the middle and frame under it are new, all the rest is years old. The new wood needed paint so I gave the whole top a fresh coat as well, old panels included. Today the new panels have bright pink streaks. Never seen anything like this before! Anyone know the cause? We did get a lot of rain overnight but the paint was dry by then and it surely hasn’t been long enough for something to grow there. The new pine boards forming the frame under the panels also got wet and is still white. I’m mostly worried about whether this means the new panels in the middle are actually not chicken safe.

Bleed through of what though? I take it not something I need to worry about? I’ve seen some weird paint reactions examples with interior paints reacting to bad stuff (stuff from rooms exposed to heavy smoke) but never seen sap or other natural stuff go such a weird color.
It's not just bleed through from the new wood. It's the paint itself, it wasn't dry. Enough, before it rained and the rain basically is what caused the discoloration simply repaint, it, make sure it doesn't get wet for a couple of days, it should be fine.I don't think there's any dangers to your chickens

Not getting wet for a couple of days is a challenge here this time of year. Since it seems like it's just unsightly and not any kind of hazard, I will probably just use the thing as-is then for now, then at some point cut a replacement panel and paint it in the house where it can dry properly. Just kind of weird I've not run into that on any other pieces of wood; I've done a lot of painting with less than a full day of dry time with this particular paint due to how wet the climate is here and it's always been fine except for this one bit of plywood.

Well I'm back to not being content with what those middle panels are doing. I got a rare 48h dry window so I painted over the pink. That was a while ago at this point. There's been no significant rain; just dew a couple of mornings and light sprinkles here and there. It stayed white for three days this time so I thought I was good until this morning. Now it's turning pink again through the fresh coat. Another explanation I've now read for this is that it's wood filler that was improperly cured, which I gather will continue to bleed through like this. That wood had been sitting dry for quite some time so that is concerning if it's improperly cured filler. Some of those products are quite toxic in an uncured state so I don't think I want that around chicks especially. I will have to go buy a new piece and replace the bits that turned pink. On the plus side that will let me replace it with a single solid piece and get rid of that annoying gap in the middle.
