My chicken Milly has white parasites in her throat has some trouble breathing sometimes and makes a sort of coughing noise to try to clear her throat she is a Plymouth rock got her November last year she is less than a year old she is laying eggs. I think it could be gapeworm? some advice would be great. she is still moving around like all the other chickens that are why it took me so long to identify that she was sick.
Thanks, Sally

I think gapeworm is a good bet. I’ve never seen video of it before, but it looks like what they describe. I’m also impressed at how she just let you hold her beak open! What a patient girl!

I know that Ivermectin and Fenbenzadole are both used to treat gapeworm. As I understand it though, you have to be careful on dosage so you don’t overload their system with dead worms they can’t rid their body of…I am interested in suggestions by some of the more seasoned chicken people on treatment. I would definitely act swiftly though! Good luck!

Gapeworms are red. This looks more like round worms. They can infest a chickens esophagus. Definitely treat for worms. Same medication. I'd give her Ivermectin. Since she's almost choking I'd use the oral paste and try to swab her mouth and throat with a very small amount diluted in olive oil.

Like a tiny smidge. Topical application will kill off the visible worms quickly, but too much Ivermectin will make your hen sicker. If you go with the injectable, .01 cc per lbs. POINT ZERO ONE.

Should I do that tomorrow because the instructions say to not let the chickens drink two hours before bed and right now where I live the sun has set?

This is good to know, thank you!

Is there a bad odor?
Doesn't look like worms to me, looks like Canker which is caused by protozoa.
Treatment for Canker is Metronidazole given 5-7 days orally at 250mg a day.
It's contagious, so treat your flock's water with Acidified Copper Sulfate for 3 days each month at 1/4tsp per gallon of water. Use only plastic or rubber containers when giving the ACS.

IF there's no odor, then it's likely a yeast infection. Nystatin would be the treatment.
