A couple days ago I saw a whitish gray bird outside. I went within 5 feet of it and it just stayed there. It has tags on both feet. I assume it has been close to humans before because it didn't fly away when I got close. It wouldn't let me catch it so I can't read the tags. Do you think it is a homing pigeon? Is there any way I can get it to come to me so I can read It's tags?
Thanks in advance for any help!big_smile

Put some hen scratch in a metal coffee can. And shake it when you see the bird, if its still around. Thats how a lot of people train there homers. If it comes to the scratch see if you can catch it with a net when it gets close. What area do you live in?

Yes, it is probably a homing pigeon, and more likely a racing homer, who is lost or taking a break from a race. Try setting up some kind of cage with food under/in it to catch the bird. Perhaps you can lure it into the chicken coop with food and close the door. Or prop up a box/wire bottom-less cage with a stick attached to a string. Put food under it, and when the bird goes under the cage, pull the string. Then you can trace the band and let the owner know you have the bird. They may just say to release it or they may come get the bird.

Thanks for all the suggestions I will try them.
