@alexisrambles A friend caught this today while we were sharing pics ... Does the
grey one (2nd pic) look to have a rose comb & not a pea comb? Do your WTB all have muffs? Pea comb? They're 5mo, the WTG have all the signs of getting ready to lay, nice squats today but the WTB are not showing color in their combs. Wondering how much longer, curious as to what color the grey lays.

I'd say yes the second one looks like a rose comb to me! One of mine had what I thought was a pea comb until a month or so ago when it grew into a rose comb! Shocked me!

Mine do not all have muffs at all. I think one has a slight muff but she's an outlier. From what I've seen the appearance is REALLY variable. I'm okay with that though, since they're terrific layers so far!

@alexisrambles - I agree, whatever they are I'm fine with them & love the variation in color. They're not laying yet although I sure the WTG/straight combs will be by the end of the month The friend I got them from kept only WTB, hers are all muffed and color variations pretty. She's more into production, so the waiting has been difficult for her, thinking they were early layers.

@alexisrambles Came home today & this is what I found, not in the nest box but thinking she may have been walking & out it popped, found by the OS ... Speckles, 5mo & 2 days. She's the one I suspected to be a cockerel due to the size of her comb/wattles early on.

See how small her wattles are? That's an effect of the pea comb gene. But the appearance is more like a rose comb, so she's probably got a walnut comb (genetically pea + rose.)

@NatJ Oh! Actually I didn't know that! My girl may have a weird walnut comb. It kinda looks like a walnut comb on top of a straight comb? Weird. She had teeny tiny wattles too. Now that she's older, she's got a bit more.

@ChickNanny13 Wow! Yours looks JUST like my dark red girl! She is a WTG and I totally thought rooster because she has an ENORMOUS comb and wattles. She really looks like a leghorn in that aspect. If yours is like mine, she'll be the top of the flock in no time! My girl laid her first egg, and hasn't skipped a day since. She's a bossy top hen, but she is just really good at her job.

I really like the small wattles that go with a pea comb, so I've made sure to learn the genetics, in case I ever get to doing a breeding project with it

@alexisrambles Yup, she's the one that I thought was a cockerel, thanks to you I kept her and waited it out. She & her sister's comb/wattles are HUGE, guessing pulling more Leghorn ... Speckles used to say in the back of the CH, now she's up front whenever I go to their enclosure. Does look like she's become the "bossy" one whereas the WTB/Dark was the one to meet me at the door every morning. Have notice the WTB are more laid back, one especially.

@NatJ It really depends on the angle seeing their combs. Like you've said, it looks like a combination, there's the point (rose) but then the rest pea. I too prefer the small combs to the single combs for sure & the smaller wattles.

Actually, I was going less by the point and more by how wide it is--covers more of the top of her head/base of the beak.

From what few I've seen in person, and what pictures I've looked at, I *think* that a rose + pea comb (walnut) has a wider base than a pure pea comb. I can see it in the photos of your Whiting True Blues, for example (unless I'm mistaking something because of the angles, which I admit is always a possibility with photos.)
