Who are your favorite egg layers?

Personally my favorite is my BO. She lays a big light brown egg every day. She rarely takes a day off, maybe once every two weeks. On top of that she is a total sweetheart. I got my first two Marans eggs yesterday so we'll see how well they lay in the weeks ahead, but one thing I can say is that their eggs are GORGEOUS! I know it makes no difference in terms of eating them but they just so beautiful to look at

I have a Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, and EE. After I got the girls, I discovered that these breeds can take a little bit longer to start laying eggs, particularly the EE. My SS just laid her first egg at the age of 22 weeks. So if you're looking for early layers these wouldn't be the ones, but I hear they will be consistent once they start!

It's hard to choose, they're all pretty darned good, AND pretty, to boot!

I love the EEs' eggs for their Easter Basket colors. I love the BR for being the most reliable layers and lovely nice brown or pinkish-brown eggs. I think the Sebright girls lay the cutest little white eggs!

I love my Cayuga for her wonderful duck eggs.

The Australorps lay very well, too.

I don't have any true layers, mine are all either dual-purpose birds or bantams. But in about six months, my little possible leghorn chicks may thrill me, even though they'll only lay white eggs. Not sure my egg customers will go for 'em, given their belief that brown eggs are "better" than white ones.

My EEs are good, consistent layers. My BO is a great layer (everyday, without fail pretty much) and so friendly to boot. Those have been my favs so far out of what I have (polish, EEs, BO, BR, Welsummer, and Barnvelders)

I think it all depends on how you are looking at things. If cost per egg is an issue then you want to stay with a standard, but not huge style of bird. For instance, buff orpingtons will cost more to feed per egg than an RIR. On the other hand, the hybrids like the golden comet, ISA, any of the sexlinks are bred for production with lower cost. However, they won't be doing much by the time they reach their second winter.

We are into things for egg production so I keep 15 ISA's and 10 delawares or RIW to breed with a RIR roo to make more sexlinks. So that gives me about 25 hens at any given time that lay eggs to sell, or breed.
