Who does self-sustaining quail?

Careful, ohio! Look where wanting a small duckweed operation led me lol

For perspective, those ponds are 3 and 4 feet deep at their deepest:

(My very tall hubby)

All of my previously purchased duckweed is gone from a few collapses we had during construction. But I have a friend 45 min away with a pond coated in it, so I will have to make time to go out there this coming weekend.

Hahaha lucky for my BF cant do anything big and permanent like that. Anythin i start has to fit inside.. and when you are doin tiny living with two people it gets tight.. so only a couple tote tanks under the table is probably going to be my limit. Then buckets outside for duckweed.

So update for us! I finally have some mealworms colony started (using organic oats) and I have my duckweed!

^ free organizer from my sister's move - sweet!

And now my ponds look like this:

And I got two varieties of cattail :)

Duckweed guru who I got it from said he wasn't sure I'll have enough light to replace the population I feed to the quail and future tilapia. Minor hitch in my plan ... But I'm still going to at least try to get a good population growing.

Tomorrow, I might get my crawfish and minnows!

Gave all my quail heaping handfuls of duckweed and they loved it :) I've been doing indoor sprouting for them too. They aren't weaned off of commercial feed yet, but I will begin to start reducing their access. They are very fat, plump girls who are hooked on their chick feed. I'll go easy on them lol

Some of their buckwheat sprouts:

I think on the fence behind the ponds, we will plant maypop, which is edible by birds (and humans).
