Who does self-sustaining quail?

Lol who knew bird people could be so punny with aquatic critters.

Not that i need more projects and wishlists but i am gonna research minnows and guppies :p

I said tote for indoor pond bc they are cheap.. easily available..
You could do a bigger tote and not fill it as much?
... yup i gotta researh this...

Lol believe it or not I have always been a fish person, had at least one tank since I was 10 and at the moment Im practically in withdrawal with only one 190gallon tank! Other critters came later (1 razormusk turtle, quail, 2 guineapigs, 2 cats, 1 dog and hopefully 3 ducks next month).

What is a tote? I have a few mini ponds out of large plastic plant pots about 25gallons, is that the type? They would probably work quite well as breeding pots for guppies and duckweed.

Did google minnows as I could only think of white cloud minnows which are egg scatterers but apparently there are many types of minnow that lay eggs differently and therefore need different types of setups. I have to say Im hedging on mealworms being the easiest to sustain with minimul effort, I love fish but without maintainance its so easy even with hardy fish to lose your entire stock (one dead fish poluting water, without adaquate water changes then nitrates and ammonia affect water quality which in turn allows disease and parasites to take hold like white spot and ich...). Even when you have a fairly good ecosystem (my tank I keep as maintance free as possible by heavily planting it and having good filteration, my razorback musk turtle and reed fish devours dead fish rapidly etc) it still can go out of sync and suffer fairly rapidly when something does go wrong.

Lol this thread might be the death of me ;) i have been researching guppies... this seems so simple that i am.waiting for there to be some "just sign your soul away here" line xD hahahahaha

Thread on keeping tank/pond without all the crazy accesorries.. jist water, fish, fish food, and lots of aqua plants.

Thread on super easy breeding system using 1gal jars/buckets..
http://www.guppies.com/forums/showthread.php/18080-Easy-breeding-tanks

Guppies seem that 99% they dont eat duckweed. So you could grow it right in their tank.
And i was thinkin of "momzilla"s old thread in the duck section doing a couple small ponds.. one for the ducks to use.. that water goes to a pond that has the duckweed growing.. that water goes to a simple homemade bucket filter.. and then thecwater goes back to the duck swim pond.
Could you do similar with guppies..?

Salsan20.. totes.. bins.. like the big plastic storage things.
Ohhhh one f those shallow long under-the-bed ones would be great for duckweed with all the surface area..

Thankyou ohiogirl!

Guppies are crazy tough as well, survive bad water, temperature changes and probably the most prolific fish! Females can store sperm as well so one mating can spawn more than one pregnancy!

Uh oh.. BF saw me doodling and saw me readin about the guppies... **grins innocently** i was just doodling! Hee hee... he said "ya dont forget your other doodling is over there" **grins again**... lol see my thread on the elec skillet bator ;)

Hm... i wonder if i just got one gallon/2gal jar and set it up cute with a guppy or two and plants... think he would mind...? ;D

Salsan yup from my reading the femfish can store sperm. So like buy one bred, she has them and starts on a new preg with stored sperm,.. repeat for about three-five pregs fromwhat i see. But each preg is less fry.. like first one could be 35 fry.. second get 26.. third get 17.. fourth get 8..

So duckweed production has led to tilapia and prawn production lol

Here are the ponds:

400

For the question about the minnows: yes you can feed them to quail (I did a few days ago and they loved it ha!) but the purpose is to fertilize the duckweed and eat mosquito larva.

We have about 500 gallons running between the two ponds. Duckweed will be grown in floated pens at the top pond. We will also have a lot more edible water plants added (taro, cattail, wasabi) and a hydroponics system.

We get a little overboard.

I'm so happy to have found so many like-minded quail people!
