Lol believe it or not I have always been a fish person, had at least one tank since I was 10 and at the moment Im practically in withdrawal with only one 190gallon tank! Other critters came later (1 razormusk turtle, quail, 2 guineapigs, 2 cats, 1 dog and hopefully 3 ducks next month).
What is a tote? I have a few mini ponds out of large plastic plant pots about 25gallons, is that the type? They would probably work quite well as breeding pots for guppies and duckweed.
Did google minnows as I could only think of white cloud minnows which are egg scatterers but apparently there are many types of minnow that lay eggs differently and therefore need different types of setups. I have to say Im hedging on mealworms being the easiest to sustain with minimul effort, I love fish but without maintainance its so easy even with hardy fish to lose your entire stock (one dead fish poluting water, without adaquate water changes then nitrates and ammonia affect water quality which in turn allows disease and parasites to take hold like white spot and ich...). Even when you have a fairly good ecosystem (my tank I keep as maintance free as possible by heavily planting it and having good filteration, my razorback musk turtle and reed fish devours dead fish rapidly etc) it still can go out of sync and suffer fairly rapidly when something does go wrong.
