I am so jealous, we have 4 miniature doxies, a pomeranian mix, and a Chihuahua.....they are all shiftless monsters (particulary the doxies). I had to build a 3' wood fence so the doxies could not see what was behind it. They smell the chickens but that is it.....I fear any contact would be bad for the flock.

I also have a mini dachshund that I let hang out with my 3 chickens. It took me about 2 weeks of training to get her to leave them alone. She leaves them alone now but is cautious around them since one of my RIR is always on the look out to peck her.

Too cute! Why would you not trust him if he is raised with them? Are daushhunds particuarly hard to train? I have two dobes (8yo and 2yo) that we introduced to our chicks as soon as we got them and worked with daily. They now consider the chickens to be theirs. They guard them obsessively agains the neighborhood cat who has been tring to kill the chickens from day one. If it were not for Julie and Leos efforts there is no way my chickens would be alive today. In fact they are all peacefully in the yard as I type this. Julian is stationed by the coop napping and Leo is in the center of the yard watching. The chickens are free ranging somewhere in the yard. My dogs are the chickens best friends.

Boomer has only "free ranged" with the girls a few times. AND it was LOVE from the first day.

However if he starts clucking, that's it, he's permanently in the coop w/them
