Who eats raw eggs?

I grew up eating shakes with raw eggs, but stopped because neighbors and friends convinced me that it was dangerous. I now have my own chickens and have been including egg whites in my smoothies. So far no trouble. I have felt that it was OK if eating your own eggs because of the way they are raised. It seem like the shells are thicker than store bought. My hypothesis is that since they aren't stacked in cages on top of one another there is less feces that come in contact with the eggs. I also heard there is a natural protective coating on the eggs to prevent bacteria from penetrating the shell. As a result, I don't usually wash my eggs that I keep. If one comes out dirty and I feel like I want to wash it, I wait until right before I crack it.

Is there any research that supports the safety of eating raw eggs from backyard chickens?

I'm not aware of any research, but can tell you my personal experience...

I was a raw eggs in smoothies, ice cream, etc person. Raw milk drinker, things like that. Then, I got leukemia. Since the chemo completely tanked my immune system, they were very particular on what I could eat. Raw eggs and milk were a no-no, so were things that are eaten raw and couldn't be thoroughly washed like berries. Once I recovered (remission

) I talked with my hematologist about resuming my previous diet, especially the raw eggs. He said he'd never advise someone to eat a raw store bought egg, but my backyard hens would be fine. So, I've been back adding raw eggs to my strawberry smoothies and life is good again! My immune system still isn't quite "normal", but apparently it's good enough.

No there is not any research that supports the safety of eating any kind of raw egg.

There is actually a large amount of logical evidence to the contrary about the safety of eating your own eggs.

However I happily ignore it all in favor of the more robust taste and texture of a home grown egg.

They are even better if they are still a little warm from just being laid.

I thought you shouldn't eat the just laid eggs, that you should wait a few days for some reason.

My dad as kids used to always make us milkshakes as we were heading to school and always added the egg, I also remember making sure he added it. Grew up and that was gross, but now I am looking forward to my hen laying me some good eggs to start again!

eat 3-4 everyday in shake. dad'schicks-eat the yolk also, eggs are the perfect protein and the yolk has more nutrition than the white alone. go to www.drmercola.com and search raw egg for info. I also pull the white from the shell, it has all the biotin in it.
You should always wash the eggs right before using, even if they do not appear dirty, just like you need to wash your veggies.
