Who else got some 2013 chicks?!

You know, they would probably be ok, but they can get bullied pretty bad form the full-grown chickens. When you add them, it disturbs the pecking order they have already established. Even though these new chicks aren't a threat, the chickens still need to drive the point home that they are dominant. One option I've heard is to get them a container, --like a rubbermaid tub-- and cut a hole out that the young birds can fit through, but the large ones can't. This way, if the youngsters have any trouble and want a break, they have a safe place to hang out. Start them in this container so that they know it's there.
I love the idea about the tote. I have 4 chicks that I added and they are getting the point a lot. I first put out my Buff's and they were alone for about 2 weeks, then I added the GLW and it only took a few days for things to settle down. But now I have the Buff's and the GLW giving them the welcome to the coop routine.
I will try the tote.
Thanks

I have my first chickens and have had my first hatches this year. My hatches were Japanese Bannies, and Americaunnas . They are blue and blue splash with some of the splashes turning solid brown with Red overlay coming in on their necks and bodies where they had been yellow at birth.

My Lavender comes from Snowbird and I have th thank Cliff every day for these babies. They are so smart and good natured . They like to sit and huddle around my shoes as if I were their Parent. Then my Mar ins Thank you Jim Hugo for these lovely Birds from the Wade Jean line. They are truly magnificent. Both the Blue and the black and the silver Burgeon.

I feel as if I am alive again. At nearly 70 when I gave up my dogs I was just weighting to die . My child died and life lost its savor. When life long friends threatened my wife and my lives we had to go into seclusion. The Chickens have been such a joy coupled with a few heart aches.

Thank you all for your many kindnesses.

Hi! My chicks will be here May 27th. I ordered from Welp and ordered 5 each of golden laced wyandottes, black minorcas, speckled sussex, easter eggers, red leghorns and naked necks! My kids showed chickens in 4H for years, ending when foxes and raccoons got everything. So it's been almost 5 years since then, and my husbands been working on a new coop, promising it will be predator proof and cute to boot! In previous years, I've ordered from Welp, Cackle, and Ideal, and was always happy with what they sent. My girls even won a few firsts and champions with them at the fair! I had so much trouble choosing which kinds to get this time though. My girls are now 18 and 20 and have their own ideas what they wanted. We all at least agreed on the naked necks! When the girls were little I would get the chicks from the post office and wake them up with the peeping little box. Good memories! I think they'd kill me if I did that now ;)

I'm really excited to get that peeping little box. !!!

It's funny how such silly creatures can make you thankful for what you still have.

Hello! I"m new here and in my 2nd year of chicks. Last year I got 8 pearl guineas, lost 6 (one just dropped dead, the other 5 to a possum attack). So this year I got 6 easter eggers...and then saw an ad on CL for mixed breed chicks for 50 cents each, and I could not resist another 8.. Have no clue what they will be as the farmers had a lot of free roaming mixes. Did the feather-sexing, hopefully that gives me all girls, but if there are any roosters, well, they're cool, too. They are the ones in my avatar. Would have gotten more, but need to stop and see what I have first LOL! And next year want to get some fuzzy/frizzie chicks. Will be bonding these with the two boy guineas that I have left and the first group - five weeks old - are getting accepted by them now. Look forward to this group...and more chicks ;)

As the grandmama of my new chicks...I put the extra nesting box with the newly hatched chicks in it plus 2 questionable eggs....she was a very happy hen out of the five who were broody...(only had five hens....lol). My girls are good mommies so far...hoping for the best in the chicks' lives.

I am waiting anxiously for my next batch, I hatched a mixed assortment in April, that will contain 5 Ameraucanas(but, probably just EEs) and 3 Gold laced cochins from Ideal Poultry. Can't wait! But, kinda apprehensive about introducing the babies to my adolescents.....
