Who else got some 2013 chicks?!

Nancy, really?, I was also thinking if maybe a mistake could ever happen. I read a thread about a "mystery chick" so I was thinking about what if we have a boy instead of all girls.
How long does is take for a difference to be noticable enough for me to understand if any are actually baby roos?

From everything I have been reading it takes a few weeks to a few months to be sure if it's a roo or hen. Sometimes it's obvious if a comb is growing in the first few weeks or really thick legs; other times not so much. But people on BYC are quite knowledgeable and if you post good/clear pics of face and body and legs they can sometimes tell at 8 weeks or so. Considering I am still waiting on my first ever chicks to arrive in 24 days (but who's counting) I really am just telling you what I have read on here, not first hand knowledge.
But I would hold off on specifically buying roos. Chances are you may have one or 2. But that sounds lit it would be a good thing for you whereas I will have to re-home.

Lol.. you check their vent to see if anything pops out. I'll see if I can find a video for you. (it's much easier for me to teach someone in person that to try to explain exactly where to push and how hard)

I got 6 little babies from TSC on Valentines DaY!!!! They are so adorable. I got one that is a bantam, it has feathers on its legs! I don't know what breed, the bin said assorted bantams. If anyone knows exactly what breeds these are your expertise would be great!!!!! Here are some pics! And I also have eggs in the incubator due to hatch on the 28th!!!!!

Hi,
My Light Sussex broody hen is sitting eggs now. We should have chicks by the 21st. I had a fancy incubation schedule planned but my girl has different ideas. Haven't been able to check under her but think she is sitting about 4 eggs. I was going to take the eggs from her, do the broody breaking thing and try to force my schedule on her...but I am intrigued. Maybe more is not better, maybe more robust is better. Sussex were historically bred to raise chicks this time of year, so she is just doing what she was bred to do. Which, I am told, is a point of breed vigor in my Sussex's favor. Plus, my BYC friends tell me hen-raised chicks are more robust. So we will see when they hatch, smile. Side thought: it's so weird to hear that hen's warning hiss when you come near the nest. I am used to gentle clucking instead, LOL.

Nice! Well my ladies (and one rooster) just turned one week old today! All are still healthy, the two extra they sent just in case was a nice bonus, and all 18 are flourishing. I cant believe how much their wings have feathered in just a weeks time. They are already fluttering up on top of their gallon waterer to get a better view of the room around them.
