who else has chicks in the house??

I had chicks in my whirlpool bath tub all winter:-D I taped the jets and drains shut, and filled the bottom with shavings. My husband hated it, but it was in my bathroom, so oh well. Now I put newly hatched chicks in the garage in small fish tanks. Then after a couple days they go in a brooder outside. I am glad winter is over.

Our 6 week old pullets are in our house until the coop is finished.

We have a mudroom bathroom and that is their temporary home. It works quite well as they are safe and warm, it is well ventilated and their chicken stuff is contained in one room that is easily cleaned. They seem so young yet,

so I like that they will be inside for a bit longer.

I have 1 chick in the brooder.
Went to get chick starter, dog and cat food, and came home with another chick.
It's in my oldest daughters room, she's sleeping in the basement.

It all happened because I mentioned to the lady that the week before we had gotten a buff orpington there but it had died the first night.
Next thing I know she's handing me a little box with an itty bitty in it and saying here ya go, lets try again.

I have had a total of 20 chicks in brooders in the house. Right now I'm down to 14. Bad thing is I have dust everywhere in the room and the older ones kick the bedding out.

We did have our chicks downstairs, in a tub my dad modified for them, until they were big enough to go outside to their special little coop. I actually enjoyed hearing them peeping.

I had chickens and guineas in my sunroom for three months last year. We got birds at the end of May, and just a few days after we got them the barn flooded. I moved them into the sunroom while we repaired the roof. We moved them back out after about a week, and no kidding, the very next weekend we had another big giant flood that came up over the sills and flooded them out again. I put plastic down over everything in the sunroom this time and we moved them in over the summer while we built them a new coop. Occasionally I'll have an injured chicken that I'll need to bring inside for a bit, but mostly they're all outside. I've only hatched under broody hens, so never had to worry about brooding up babies in the house or garage.

(Wow, according to my notes on the album the barn flooded three times last summer. It's a blur to me now! LOL!)

Aloha from maui,
IN THE HOUSE OF COURSE
Big brooder has 25 blue self colored old english, danvers and micro serama, 10 ga fish tank has 5 6 week old serama and 4 4 day old bantam silky (same size right now). I get new day olds as they get bigger than the serama's, basically they are here only to keep the serama company. They are in my bedroom, for 24 hour care.
Was actually looking for baby chick posts when this post caught my eye. wanted to pass on some nifty tips

My brooders have 'pet mats' inside instead of shavings, i change them as often as needed. Bought at Walmart, clearance $5, I think they are for a litterbox gravel overflow or maybe food bowls so they dont slip. When they are dirty i throw them in washer on hot first a quick wash/rinse then a complete wash cycle on heavy duty - it works way better than anything else, also those non-slip rolls that you can put in your cabinets or tool box, GREAT stuff, wash same as matts.

MAMA's brooders have stuffed animals that also go in same load, shy and weak chicks tend to snuggle up to the 'mama' chicks can climb on if they need more heat, move to lower extremities for less heat, they go into the same hot wash when dirty. Purchase from garage sales, savers a bout a dollar each. After each batch goes to outside brooder, mama gets thrown away.

Hope this doesnt gross anyone out - i chew up fresh corn and handfeed the babies all day, then give them cobb to nibble. When i put my hand in brooder they all climb on it lokking for treats, this behavior will last their lifetime, always coming towards me and not running away.

regarding lone chicks they are really needy, get another chick, or find a friend, even a guines pig will help raise chick. i got one of those sound machine things and also put on the heartbeat mode next to the stuffed animal.

It has a stuffed chicken with it, a radio playing all night, and human hands to keep it warm all day. I may bring runty tiki back in for a week but she has attached herself to bellatrix, who in turn has attached herself to a duck. So not sure what to do. We are over our poultry limit already, now by 2.

We have 10 - 3 day old chicks in a brooder in our house

They are in our rabbits bedroom right next to the living room (yes, my bunnies have their own bedroom

) and am so happy to have them in the house. I can't imagine not having them inside, I just love watching them and being next to them!
