found blood in a nest box the egg was cracked when it fell, remember I told you....I need cushion in my nest boxes? ...but the egg had no blood on it...

I set my eggs on the 8/13/15, should be hatching the firt week in sept , 16 oegbs 6 cuckoo marans and 11 ee's cant wait till sept.

I had made nest boxes...dummy me and very new at the time...open shelves

since then and learning that they would roost in them, since the roost were leveled with the nest boxes..as you can see...I have put in that area you see all the chicks...a double boxed shelf laying on its side, and I hammered a ledge so the eggs didnt roll out, they use the bottom nest you see also sometimes...the other side of the coop are open, cant firgure out how to enclose them...Im not a builder...so they dont fall every far down....

egg shells use to be real thick, maybe its time for a bump up on cal.....and I have 8 hens, been getting 7 eggs a day...so might have a new one laying.

I just have the door open to air out the coop for now...Ive come along way now...

If it were my hens, I'd probably give everyone a quick "vent check" to be sure. Just make sure none of them are actively bleeding.
When we were remodelling our coop (adding on) we used stackable totes with open fronts for temporary nest boxes. Filled 'em with shavings, stacked one on top of the other on the floor & the ladies laid in them.
We have since put in our metal nesting boxes. Our ladies aren't too picky, though. If it's got 5 sides, they'll lay in it.

well Ive have on the floor of the coop...milk crates..with shavings...they wont touch them...and some are tipped over. I guess when they stand on them...they tip them over...what can I use to anchor them to something???

pagan, thats the way I have mine on the coop floor on there sides....but they flip over...besides how can it be comfy with a brick in there....? would hurt my butt!!!
