Thanks for the advice Iam. It could be sticky I guess although hard to tell. It doesn't look like it's cold and shivery. More just damp. I don't have a thing to tell me what the humidity is doing in this incubator although there's a heap of condensation which I think is normal for this type. There's 2 wells for water and the manual just said to keep one filled for the first 17 days and then up the water to 2 wells for the final 3+ days, so not all that scientific! Reading the other threads I thought I would ere on the side of too much humidity rather than too little. I'll keep an eye on it, but fluffed up by 5 hours later would be more normal, right?
I think I just heard tapping! Please let it be one of the others!

kaffleck--5 hours would be normal, yes--usually mine are pretty fluffed after an hour, unless they are sticky... I hope the tapping leads to more pipping & zipping for you!

My 8-year-old adopted this one, and her name is Shining Pearl. Pearl for short.

So, two ducks so far: Harry and Shining Pearl.

What a cute duckie!!! I want ducks also....DH is ahhh Im not sure...I said chickens for a few eggs and THAT WAS IT....now we have chickens, main coop..big....2 roos porc. d'uccles...own coop..in D'uccle Manor...mini coop with baby chicks from first hatch ever now 28 days old, and this hatch due any day now...

im not too sure I want you to have ducks....

And another one! A yellow duckie hatched out while hubby and I were out on a date tonight. What a nice thing to come home to!

That brings my total to three, with several more pipping and/or starting to zip.

I haven't gotten a good picture of the newbie yet, but here's a somewhat blurry picture of the three of them cuddling by the eggs:

And... another pip! That brings my total to:

3 hatched
4 zipping
2 pipped
3 nada (so far)

I will probably not sleep much tonight--if I want to know which ducks came from which eggs (and I DO--because I'm tracking all kinds of things, and I need to know which is which), then I will have to check on the four zippers every hour or so. Whew!

Aww look at crushy (aka Pearl) - she's sooo cute! So glad she made it!
My chick made it through the night and I'm up early and going to set the brooder up now. Should be able to get s/he into it before the school run. Nothing from the other 2 yet but I wouldn't be able to hear if they are peeping through this ones racket!

Hey iamcuriositycat, glad to hear you're having so much success, real cute pictures! I look forward to seeing them all fluffed up huddled together. They look so much 'tougher' than baby chicks which look 'breakable'. What breeds are your ducklings?

Good morning (yawwwwwwnnnn!!!)--

Hi all, I set my alarm to go off every two hours so I could record which ducks are coming out of which eggs (I'm insane, right??)

And there is one hatching now (another black) and one actively zipping (dark bill)...

Yawnnnn...

The ducks are all Runners; some are out of a fawn & white hen and some out of a blue. All are fathered by a blue. I should get blacks, blues, silvers, and whatever f&w x blue makes--which is why I'm recording which is which--I *think* I know which eggs are from each hen, so I want to know what f&w x blue does. Unless I'm wrong about the eggs coming from my f&w, it looks like the color mix makes a variety of things--one yellow (with darker hood) and one that looks for all the world like a blue with a yellow breast...

And yes, I think ducklings *are* stronger at hatching. Of course they're a little bigger because the eggs are; also they have to be tougher to get through a tougher shell & membrane. Also, they take much longer to hatch--typically 24-48 hours between pip & zip. So they build strength before hatching.

kaffleck--I'm so glad to hear about your chickie making it through!

kyliekobe--yay!! Now comes the hardest part--leaving it alone while you wait. And wait. And wait.

Gotta go check on my hatching dumpling. I plan to put all that are hatched by six this morning in the brooder. I'll post pics of the newbie soon!
