Jen5680, Congrats! That is so cool. How many eggs did you have in the incubator?
I have so many questions it's unbelievable. I have two that hatched, one that is
hatching and a more pips. I love hearing them. Hope you have more new little fuzzies tonight.
Do you know the best place on this site to ask a bunch of questions? (stupid newbie
questions!!)
I have 3 little quail from yesterday and today hatched but I just put my first chicken eggs in lockdown. I'm so nervous and excited. The are 5 Olive eggers (Maransacauna) and 1 light olive egger (EE X RIR).
SuziQ--Congrats on your hatch so far! Very exciting!!
You can post your questions here in this thread, but you'll probably get more responses if you simply start a new thread. Everyone here is SO friendly, don't worry about the fact that they're "newbie" questions--no one minds, and you'll probably get lots of answers. Go on, ask away!!
Thanks iamcuriositycat, I have one that is lying on it's stomach
(for hours) with it's legs stretched out straight behind him. Is that
normal? The other one is already trying to get up on it's feet,
and never did lie in that position. This one just slept like it was
dead in that position for most of the day. Now it tries to, but
just can't seem to get it's legs under it.
Also have one that is about half out of the shell, but the membrane
has dried up around it and I'm not sure it can completely hatch. Tried
moistening it with warm water and a Qtip and opened the shell a little
more, (a nice member in the chat section suggested that earlier) but
it doesn't seem to be able to get out of the shell. May just be exhausted,
but the others are already getting fluffy and it pipped about
30 minutes after the first two. If it hasn't hatched completely by morning,
should I try to get it out of the shell, and if so, what's the safest way to do
that?
I feel as nervous as when I was a new mom years ago! Too many
questions and no experience!!!
...and hundreds of miles from family so noone to ask!
Thank heavens for all the great Backyard Chickens members!
This is one big pip party! I can't wait till I get my first pip...can't stop checking the bator. I got up at 3:00 in the morning to check. Must get some sleep! Good luck to everyone! Baby chicks are the best!
Boy oh boy i'm exhausted, I got three hatched and three zipping day 21 just ended at 6pm for me, perfect timing
I'm hoping for 6 from 6, only set 11 of my own eggs, 5 not fertile . I been up and down to these chicks for last two days frettin. Rest later tonight. ahhhhhh. I hope. My goat is overdue to give birth as well, may be up all night tonight as well.
SuziQ--I don't know enough about chicks to say--my first hatch only produced 3 (of 5) ducklings, but they did recover at different rates--one seemed to take forever, though I don't remember how long it really was. They were all fine in the end (well, one died at a week old, but I don't think that had anything to do with hatching).
Some do take longer to hatch than others. But since it's already mostly out, it probably won't hurt to help it a bit if it's still in the shell by morning. I bet it will be out though--let us know.
If the weak chick is still having trouble by morning, I would post a question in its own thread--it will probably get more responses that way. I hope it is fine in the morning!
