Who gets the alcohol, you or the bird?

So I heard from a friend that an old time farmer that she knows says she uses plenty of alcohol to get her chickens drunk before butchering. What do you think?

I have been planning to find a way to give thanks for the birds sacrafice, but I had been thinking a ceremony or something akin to those practiced by native americans in past generations.

But the alcohol doesn't sound like such a bad idea. I am just not sure if I should share it, or drink it myself. Being of northern european decent, I am pretty sure my ancestors would have included some wine, or at least some beer in any ceremony that they were a part of.

That's an interesting concept. I think I'd take a swig and give the birds the axe!

Edited to say-I'm not making light of your dilemma, sometimes I can't help myself! Hope you find an answer that suits your needs.

By the way, while this is an easy one to get a chuckle out of, I am very serious about whether you experienced butchers think it would help to relax the birds. I had heard relaxed bird = more tender meat.

My mom also has a story as a girl of her chickens high on fermented corn mash.

How do you get the chickens to drink alcohol? I wouldn't think they would like it. If you tell me they do, then that's it, I'm locking up my beer stash so they can't get to it!

True Trilyn.

At the very least it may help the butchering go down for me. While I feel a responsibility to be a part of the full journey, I am not looking forward to the actual act.

I figured corn mash made from beer with a bourbon kicker seemed like a good idea. Maybe a short fast and then that on the morning before d-day.....

For a good beer they might just learn to pick a lock.

Well, the birds should get it first. Because well...you know why.

Then if there is any left over you get it.
