Who here has brought home more chicks then they originally planned?

For at least the next two months, you can call me a CHICK HOARDER!

I had a broody hatch out 8, I just couldn't resist two more to put under her so she has 10- and I'm putting 70 eggs into lockdown on Wednesday morning!

Well....we originally planned on 5 hens. Then we came home from the feed store with 5 hens and 10 Cornish Crosses. Then we got an incubator. It was ALL downhill from there.

We're now at: around 70 chickens
7 ducks
2 turkeys


The incubator is running (of course) with goose eggs, guinea eggs, duck eggs and of course...more chickens.


And we've already sold lots this year, and processed some more. Oh well.

I was the one to leap on the idea of having chickens, and my cautious SO initially agreed to 3. Then we went to Agway to order them, and learned there was a minimum of 6. I turned to him, with trepidation, and asked if he was okay with 6, and he replied...wait for it..."Let's get 12". He got there slower than I did, but he got there.

So, now we have 3 BO, 3 BR, 3 PR, and 3 LB, all 5 days old today. And I swear, one of the Buffs has learned that if she screams her head off, I'll open up the brooder to play...

Not quite as drastic as everyone else but we are allowed to have 2 hens in town so I bought 3 just in case we lost one and well they are all doing great so we have 3 hens.

I begged and begged my husband for just one more

but he said no.

I already have 12 hens and I came home from buying feed with 8. Oh my! My husband is learning about chicken math.

It would be a shorter thread if you asked who has NOT brought home more chicks than they planned for...ever. I gurantee dead silence, thread killer for sure. Banish the thought!

I was supposed** to bring home ONLY 3, 3 chicks? Thats not even worth the gas!

Let's see. We thought we'd like about 10 to start. We bought 12 because we thought there was a good chance they might not all make it. They did. Then about a month later I went to the feed store and they had breeds I'd wanted previously but they hadn't been available when we bought the first 12. We bought 9 more then. They all lived, too. So then we were up to 21 from 10. Then my son decided he'd show chickens for 4H.....so we bought some more. Our new coop construction starts this weekend, weather permitting, and we have resized that sucker at least 3 times to accomodate a couple more. If I don't stop soon, I might be sleeping out there with them. My DH has reached his limit.

We were going to get 6, I got 16. oops.

I originally planned on only getting 4 australorps - some guy from work had more than he wanted from a hatchery order. then he sold then out from under me. so i went to tsc - they had their chicks on sale for 50 cents a piece cause it was the last few days so i got 4 - then walked by a bin and picked out 2more -cause they looked cute

so - out of that batch - 4 hens - 2 roos - both banties on the roos....had to process one then one of the hens got out - so ended up with 4 again

then my dad noticed that i could probably fit 10 chickens in the yard hmmm

so got 8 young birds from a lady on craigs list - hoping for at least 4 hens - ended up with ONE

soooo after a sad afternoon of processing roos - decided to go to TSC for some chick retail therapy ... and bought 6 pullets (cause i had a broody with bad eggs... so they were for her of course not me

then got greedy and bought 3 more - but one of the older roosters knocked the brooder light out of the sockiet and they died in the cold -

so went to atwoods and bought 4 - of which the momma got to one of them and killed it - and they bit another on the neck (lucky is now thriving in the house... then made mistake of going to TSC for the blukote stuff for her neck... and the enablers made me walk past the chick bin to get it - found 3 more of the original breed my daugher wanted (same as the first 3 we lost) so got more - TSC and ATWOODS are EVIL ENablERS
