I never planed to have chickens again, but that went out the window. I was told that if I could catch the roo that was running lose in the neighborhood, then I could have him. He had belonged to a good friend of ours. Well, having caught any chickens that escaped when my grandmother had them, I knew to wait till it rained to get him out of a tree. It rained, I caught him. We had no intentions of having any others. Reggie the Roo got lonely and started picking his feathers out and putting up a huge fuss. So our friend brought us two hens that needed a new home. We now have 14 chickens and plan to get more when I get a new coop and run built.
DH and I were "talking" about getting chickens; not entirely sure I wanted to delve into a species that has the feathers I'm allergic to. But when a hen low on the pecking order needed a home, we said sure. We loved her! I spent hours looking at breeds of chickens; my list grew longer and longer; then the long list was pared down to the practical number of 25 egg layers. When they were all feathered out, looking like little hens I felt the urge for more chicks. Cute, tiny peeps! And then I went to the feed store. . . . and bought 4 BO. . . . a few weeks later 10 EE . . .and ordered 6 turkeys. We love having the birds . . . my son wants an iguana--I tell him how boring that would be after playing "restaurant" with the hens!
Went for the minumum six at TSC, but had to go out of town for them. I forgot a small feeder (I got the big ones, but realized they were to big for the rubbermaid-like tub), so I stopped at the local TSC on the way home. Of course they had just got their chicks in. Six more. A couple weeks later I had to stop by TSC for some grit as bugs that make it in the garage were making it into the brooder. Six more.
#@^%*&! chicken math!!
So, I've got six Barred Rocks, three Buff Orps, three White Rocks, and six Production Reds now. Two of the WRs are cockerels, and I'm not sure on the Reds yet. All others are pullets.
4 was my limit. Within a month, I was at 45. Gave away a bunch of roos, now I have 8 broody hens sitting on eggs. 9 chicks so far, about a week old, more on the way.
I first thought of 3 or 4. Came home with 6, lost one, went back and got another. That is this year.
This is my first time doing this, but I can already tell there will be more next year ! Just dont tell my DH.
HAHAHA Funny thread.. Lets see.. Last spring ds wanted chicks. He was 3 and loved watching them. DH and I said okay. We went for 12 and came home with 30 from TSC. A few weeks later hubby went to a friends house to pick up a couple laying hens and came home with 2 hens plus....... 80 chicks... Mind u we were new to this but we did have enough space ready for that many. So we had around 110 birds total. Started weeding them out here and there, sending a cage full home with friends and neices and nephews. Figured out the white leghorn pullets that TSC sold us were really meaties and 19 of them were roosters!!! ugh! We had bought 20 of those and 10 straight run RIR's. Well the RIR's were all pullets but are actually prod reds, I think.. Well my son would not part with his white chickens so slowly and sneaky i got rid of all of them except the one pullet. And oddly enough she never died and lays us a double yolker egg almost everyday! She is the hugest chicken ever but I just couldnt do it cause she is his best friend. She will sit on his lap and he just talks and plays with her.. LOL Anyway back to topic. We weeded them out and got down to 12 hens and a rooster and then spring was upon us..... Not real sure exact counts but we now have roughly 40 standard chicks and 10 bantam chicks. 4 ducklings and 4 guinea keets with a cackle hatchery surprise on the way in the next few weeks! Yes we are crazy! We have a 10 by 10 coop with a 25' by 10' run on it for the layers. Plus they free range everyday all day on 35 acres. So we have plenty of room for them. Jut have to get the duck pen done in the next few weeks. I moved my last 4 chicks from the brooder to the brooder/growout pen this morning so u know what that means..... I CANNOT GO INTO THE FEED STORE!!!! LOL Or I will have 10 more!
