Who is with me?

Day 1 is almost past and I am counting down to day 7 when I will candle. That is the time I will know how many are fertile and how many aren't. The ones that seem unfertile will be marked and set back in until day 10. If no fertility then, out they go. I want all of them to be fertile. Really, what is the difference if you have 10 chickens or 30 chickens, can anyone really tell the difference?

TODAY:

DAY #1

Alright country bumpkin, I got 13 salmon favorolles in the incubator about an hour ago. I check them about every 2 minutes but I dont think they are done yet. This is gonna be a long wait.

Well, this will be just a LITTLE later than the rest, but my Light Brahma eggs came today and will be in tonight or tomorrow morning.
Should be interesting to see the size difference between them and the little bantam Salmon Faverolles!

OK, my first question.... But first let me explain. I have a cheap still air LG 9200. I also live in a trailer, which is poorly insulated. Temp lately can reach 85-90. I read that with a still air the temp should be 102. what is an execptable temp. fluctuation. At night it is getting to about 99.5 and during the hottest part of the day it spikes to about 103. This thing is so hard to adjust that I reallt dont want to mess with it. Any advise...........

Prince- We live about an hour and 15 mins apart! I also use the LG 9200. I have a new home now but a few years ago I had a raggedy ole trailer house that we used window units in. I saw temp swings like you are seeing but my biggest problem back then was too much humidity. My lack of knowlage drowned quite a few chicks.
Back to your question.... I think that that is an acceptable temp range. From all the reading I have done, you want a temp range of 101-102 for the still air bators. The 99.5 is the recommendation for forced air bators. I now have three temp guages going. Two digital ones and the little one that came with the bator. One of the digital ones has a tiny probe end that I put in an egg that I cracked a small hole in and filled with water and taped up. This one is giving me a constant temp of 100 deg. The two reading air temps are bouncing from 98 to 105. I stuck with the internal egg temp on my last hatch and had 34 of 37 make it.
Also, If you only have 12 eggs in, I recommend putting ceramic eggs or flat rocks in the bator to help with retaining heat when you open the bator up.
I hope my rambling will help!

Luckily for me I have another batch that will move into the hatcher tomorrow. This 1st batch is due to hatch on Wednesday.

I candled tonight--I think it's day 5? Maybe 4. I need to double check. 2 eggs had definite little spiders starting. 1 egg had a very thick shell but looked like a dark spider thing starting to form. The other 5 eggs all had big dark yolk blobs, but I couldn't find any evidence of a spider or veins forming yet...

I'm excited to have so many people to hatch with!!

yes, Im so excited too! I look at them every 5 minutes! lol.. its only been day 2! but earlier my brother tricked me, his little boy has a little chick toy that he got for easter that peeps, and he was in there peeping it! and I was like "Whaaaat!?!!?" haha!

I just went and collected eggs from my RIR hens. One of them is HUGE! I don't think I have ever seen one this large from a chicken. I put a light to it and it has a single yolk. It went in the bator. It will be interesting to see how large a chick develops from this one!
