Thank you ChicKat, you may be right! That's my special girl and she's been extra loving lately, staying out of the coop later than the rooster and being a little more loud than usual. I updated my first post with the surprise I got inside!

pick up each hen if posible and look at the vent.
the non layers will have a dry closed up vent while the layer(s) vent will be moist and opon.

Hum, that is interesting, Roxy. The other day we were in the garden before dark and Red the rooster was doing his usual evening swooning. He happened to pick one of the Australorps and since we were standing behind her, we both commented that she had her tail feathers raised up and it looked 'different' than usual. I hope that means if she's not the egg layer, that she will lay soon!

Caught her in the nestbox about 20 minutes ago when I went out to freshen the nestbox bedding (before when they were younger, they kicked it all out...time to fix it up again! lol) and she was sitting there. I left and gave her a few minutes until I saw her standing in the doorway of the coop. She left me another perfect light brown egg.

She laid another today! She's quickly becoming my favorite. LOL Now if I could just get the other 11 who are the exact same age to start too.....
