Who Loves Rhode Island Reds

My RIR's are chicks, but I got them for a reason. Well a few reasons. One was that I like the thought of their demeanor. I can't wait to see how much I love them as they continue to grow.

But the birds are large and are a mix of buff/burnt orange colors throughout their feathers. Its not an even shade though. I belive I have one actaully. Shes heavier then the red stars.

I have some 2 or 3 month old RIRs and one of them, Val, short for Valentine, is one of my faves

. Right now I have 7 Reds. 3 possible pullets (too young to tell yet) 3, 3 month old pullets, Val included, and 1 Roo that's a bit younger. Any one want a RIR roo for $5 in or near ABQ NM? LOL I just love how reds are one of the friendlier breeds, the brown eggs, and just the fact that their a simple but wonderful breed. Sure I love exotic and other rare breeds but reds definitely tie with BOs for one of my favorite egg layer and just in general favorite breeds.

I've got bantam RIR's, and they are my most people friendly birds of all that I have. I also have Silkies, Cochins, and Mille Fleur D'uccles, but my little RIR's are by far the true "lap chickens".

I live about 2 miles from the RIR monument located in Adamsville RI. One of these days I'm gonna take a picture of the monument with one of my little guys sitting on it.

After reading the history from Chris, and looking at the pics, it appears that my girls are not purebreds.

The question is "What are they?" The first pic is of a very pretty chicken, but she is much lighter than the true RIR.

The second one has Black splashes on her feathers, and she may be closer to a purebred.

They all have very light wing feathers (just the tips are showing in pic 3)

Are these Production birds?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rhode Island Red breeders went in 2 different directions some years back. Some bred to maintain the standard description & some selected based on production not appearance. Your birds apperar to me to be production bred Reds. They are "pure bred" but not bred to maintain the standard description. This is the type of RI Red most hatcheries sell.

I started out w/RIR's and love their beautiful, warm red color, their personalities and then got a trio of bantam RIR's but those are living w/my xDH and his 2nd wife so I will be meeting our bantam RIR's who now are raising chicks the week of the 19th when I go down for our 2nd son's wedding:) I'm looking forward to hatching eggs from those birds we are sharing!

I crossed one young RIR hen to my BO roo and got a young roo and a young hen from the standard size because both parents have outstanding personalities. The young hen is trying to sit on her eggs:)
